An Eye On Curriculum

Helpful Learning Tips for Home: Reading Together
Why Reading Together Matters
Reading with your child is one of the most valuable activities you can do. It:
- Expands your child’s vocabulary
- Broadens their understanding of the world
- Builds confidence in using language
- Strengthens the connection between spoken and written words
Reading together sets the foundation for strong literacy skills and a lifelong love of learning.
Book Discussion: Chat About the Story
Talking about books before, during, and after reading helps your child think critically and express ideas. Encourage them to share opinions, ask questions, and make connections.
Questions to Try:
Before Reading:
- Look at the cover. What do you think this book might be about?
- How would you describe the character at the beginning of the story?
During Reading:
- How does the setting in the story make you feel?
- What do you think is going to happen next?
- Why might a character have acted this way? What would you do in the same situation?
After Reading:
- Who was your favourite character in the story? Why?
- What was your favourite part of the story? Why?
- Does this story remind you of anything else you have read or experienced?
- Can you retell the story in your own words?
Making the Most of Screen Time
The same discussion questions can be applied when watching TV shows or films together. Understanding and interpreting visual media is a key part of literacy development.
