Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday us the day before Lent begins. As Lent is a time of fasting and living more simple spiritual lives, the day before was a day where any foods that would not be consumed during Lent would be eaten (fats, sugars etc).
From this practice the tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday was developed.
Thanks to our Community Collective, the students will receive a pancake on Tuesday the 17th to celebrate Shrove Tuesday.
The students will also participate in a classroom-based liturgy to launch the Project Compassion appeal and pray for their Lenten journey.
Lent and Ash Wednesday
Lent is the time before Easter where Catholics dedicate time to spiritual growth and preparation. We use this time to reflect on our lives, seek forgiveness, and renew our relationship with God. Lent is marked by 3 core actions - Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes at Easter.
At St. Therese's, we mark the beginning of Lent with the traditional action of receiving the ashes. The ashes we receive are a symbol of the spiritual journey we undertake during Lent. The use of ashes to as a symbol of repentance can be traced back through the Bible in the Hebrew Scriptures. You are invited to join us in this tradition one of the following Ash Wednesday liturgies.
- Ash Wednesday Mass - Grades 4-6 at 9:15 am - St. Therese's Church
- Ash Wednesday Liturgy (without Communion) - Grades 1-3 at 12:40 pm - St. Therese's Church
Upcoming events
- Stations of the Cross - 2nd April
- Project Compassion Solidarity and fundraising events (details to come).
