Remembrance Day
On the 11th of November, school captains Leela and Seb led a ceremony for the whole school to commemorate the 107th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War.
Each year, we observe Remembrance Day to honour and commemorate those who have served and sacrificed their lives in World War I and in all wars since. In World War I alone, around 20 million people lost their lives — over 60,000 of them were Australian.
The captains read the famous poem, In Flanders FieldsBy John McCrae
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Then, students across the school were invited to take some time to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in Australia and to remember the thousands of brave men and women who have served our nation throughout history. The freedoms we enjoy today are owed to their courage and selflessness.
