Our Year 7 students have been immersed in the study of biological classification, developing a strong understanding of taxonomic levels and the distinguishing features used to group and identify living organisms. 

Through this unit of study, students explored how scientists classify species based on shared characteristics, evolutionary relationships, and observable traits, building a solid foundation in biological science.

 

To enrich their learning and connect theory with real-world application, students participated in a research excursion to the zoo. During this experience, each student selected a species to investigate in depth, gathering firsthand observations and information. They examined structural and behavioural adaptations that enable animals to survive in their environments, analysed habitat requirements, and considered the role of enrichment strategies in supporting physical health, mental stimulation, and overall wellbeing for animals in captivity.

Returning to the classroom, students synthesised their research into detailed and visually engaging dioramas. These models demonstrated not only scientific accuracy but also a clear understanding of each species’ ecological needs, interactions with its environment, and adaptations for survival. The process encouraged critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, while reinforcing key scientific concepts.

 

The culminating Zoo Expo provided an opportunity for students to present their work to peers, families, and staff. The event was a showcase of rigorous research, thoughtful design, and enthusiastic learning. Visitors were highly impressed by the depth of knowledge displayed and the quality of the models, making the Expo a memorable celebration of student curiosity, collaboration, and scientific inquiry.
