What's Happening In Grade 1?

The Year 1’s have had a busy Term 4. Recently we had a visit from Life Education where students were learning about some physical and social changes that occur as they grow older. We have also had remembrance day where we had an amazing assembly, and created a beautiful display of poppies to remember those who have lost their lives. We also had the Grade 1 dinner happen this term, where the Grade 1s were able to join the Grade 2s for an evening of eating, playing, and entertainment with a great magic show where all the kids (and staff) had fun! Feel free to explore some of the snapshots of these events below!

Mathematics

During Term 4 in Mathematics, students used a range of concrete materials to help them learn all about sharing and grouping. They have been practicing how to skip count in 2s, 5s, and 10s, and are now in the process of making equal groups in more efficient ways.

We have also been learning about capacity and comparing the capacity of different containers, as well as learning about data, and how it can be gathered and represented in a range of ways!

English

In English students are learning about Explanation texts. When reading, students are working on identifying the structure of their explanation texts, their use of nouns, descriptive vocabulary, and time words.

We will be continuing to extend our students phonemic and phonological awareness skills this term using ‘Sounds-write’ exercises, which has provided a focus on breaking down words into their sounds, blending them together and manipulating sounds to create new words. We have begun to use the extended code and have been learning about the different ways to spell both the /ee/ sound, and the /ay/ sound.

Future Focused Learning

During our Future Focused Learning sessions this term our Grade 1s have been learning all about geography!  They have learnt to identify and describe a range of things about places including whether they are natural, managed, or constructed, the different links we have with places, and how we care for the land.

At the start of the term, students were asked to explore how they might be connected to a range of places using google earth, and we were able to explore how our local neighbourhood has changed over the years including before Mackellar Primary school was built! We look forward to seeing how this learning will develop as we continue through the term and how they care for their environment!
