Support Unit

The Support Unit has had a busy and productive term across all learning areas, with students engaging in activities that promoted hands-on learning, leadership and growing independence.
In SU4 and SU5, Geography lessons focused on Sustainable Biomes, where students explored how different environments are used and protected. In English, students studied autobiographies, reading personal stories and beginning to write about their own experiences. Leadership development was also a key focus this term. SU4 students mentored Year 7s during PE lessons, helping them build teamwork skills through basketball and dodgeball. Additionally, Support Unit student mentors, who completed three training sessions on effective mentoring, played an important role in welcoming and assisting new students during the 2027 transition morning.
Travel Training was another major highlight. Students planned journeys, practiced using public transport, and applied social skills during visits to Sydney Domestic Airport, Haymarket/Chinatown, Circular Quay and Westfield Eastgardens. These real-world experiences significantly supported students’ independence and confidence.
Some Year 11 students began Term 4 with a memorable camp at Hawkesbury CCC, participating in kayaking, rock climbing and abseiling, activities that strengthened teamwork and encouraged personal challenge. In the Work and Community program, SU11 continued their travel training, successfully navigating local destinations including Green Square, Mascot, Maroubra Junction and Westfield Eastgardens. Students demonstrated strong skills in route planning and money management. Over the past two years, SU11 students have also contributed to environmental sustainability by collecting and sorting recyclables through the Return and Earn Scheme, raising $600 to benefit both the school and the environment.
Across the term, the Support Unit embraced creative and cultural learning, developing visual literacy, attending a play at the Opera House, and celebrating community achievements. These diverse learning experiences have contributed to a well-rounded and enriching term for all students.
