A Journey Through History and Geography

This term in HSIE, our students engaged in enriching learning experiences that broadened their understanding of both the world’s past and present. Year 7 students completed an exciting unit on Medieval Europe, the Spanish Conquest, and Polynesian Expansion, exploring how early explorations shaped cultures and societies across the globe. In Year 8 Geography, students investigated the essential topic of water in the world, including hands-on water audits, and learned about the important connections between people, places, and environments. Year 9 focused on the dynamic nature of places by studying how communities and environments change over time, helping students appreciate the social and cultural factors that shape our world. Meanwhile, Year 10 students deepened their knowledge of environmental change and management, with a particular focus on forests and their critical role in supporting human wellbeing and sustainable development. We are incredibly proud of our students’ curiosity, engagement, and critical thinking throughout these units, which helped them better understand their place in the world and the challenges we all face.

Remembrance Day: Honouring Our Heroes

This term, our school came together to respectfully commemorate Remembrance Day, led by our dedicated student leaders from the Modern History class. Students engaged in meaningful activities, including creating poppies as a symbol of remembrance for the brave soldiers who served to protect our nation. We were honoured to begin the ceremony with a heartfelt Welcome to Country delivered by Aunty Karen, which connected us to the rich traditions and culture of the land we stand on.

Additionally, our school captains represented us with pride at the Mascot RSL Sub-Branch ceremony, further demonstrating our community’s commitment to honouring those who have served.

This special event provided a valuable opportunity for our students to reflect on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, fostering a deeper understanding of our history and the importance of peace. We thank our student leaders, staff, and community members for making this day a powerful and respectful tribute.

Studies of Religion - Jason Timor visit

Year 12 Studies of Religion received a visit from Jason Timor, who runs ‘Stonecrab’, a consultancy firm which advises companies on best practice when it comes to hiring First Nations Australians. Jason’s family live in Queensland but he originally hails from the Torres Strait Islands. Jason has a wealth of knowledge on the topic of Aboriginal Reconciliation which is an issue we examine in Studies of Religion. His visit helped connect students to the realities of what it means to be a First Nations Australian today, and why reconciliation is such an important step towards bridging the enormous gap of equality that sadly still exists in Australia.

Supreme Court Visit - Legal Studies

This term, Year 12 Legal Studies students attended the 2025 ADR Address at the Supreme Court of New South Wales, hearing the Hon. James Allsop AC reflects on the courts’ role within the wider dispute resolution system and the importance of mediation in achieving just outcomes for individuals. His address highlighted how ADR processes promote accessibility, efficiency and fairness within the legal system. Students were able to connect these ideas with their studies on basic legal concepts, the individual and the law, and the growing significance of resolving disputes outside formal court processes.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the HSIE faculty members for their exceptional dedication and enthusiasm. Their innovative approaches and strong commitment have played a vital role in delivering meaningful and engaging learning opportunities that continue to inspire our students throughout the year.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to educate and inspire the next generation!
