English, Drama & LOTE

As we conclude another vibrant and rewarding year, the English faculty is excited to share some of the standout learning experiences and achievements from Term 4.
In Year 8, students had the unique opportunity to enhance their language learning through a cultural excursion to a local Spanish restaurant. This immersive experience allowed them to practice their conversational Spanish in a real-world setting, sample authentic cuisine, and gain a deeper appreciation of Spanish customs and traditions. The outing not only supported their language acquisition but also encouraged greater cultural awareness and enthusiasm for global communication.
Year 9 students have engaged enthusiastically with the fascinating genre of dystopian literature. Over the term, they studied a variety of dystopian texts, analysing themes such as government control, environmental collapse, and individual freedom. This critical exploration culminated in an inspired creative writing project, where students crafted their own dystopian narratives. Their stories demonstrated a strong command of narrative techniques, character development, and thematic expression, reflecting both their understanding of the genre and their imaginative capabilities.
Year 7 students have enjoyed a delightful exploration of classic fairytales with a twist. Through reading traditional tales, they identified familiar narrative elements before transforming these stories by adding innovative plot twists and contemporary themes. This exercise has fostered creative thinking, enhanced their storytelling skills, and deepened their appreciation of literary conventions and how they can be playfully subverted to create fresh and engaging narratives.
This term has also been marked by significant professional growth within our faculty. Our staff have been particularly engaged in professional learning and curriculum development to prepare for the implementation of the new NESA syllabus for Stage 6 English in 2026. Through collaborative workshops, curriculum planning sessions, and research into best teaching practices, teachers have been developing fresh and innovative programs for the Year 11 English course. This proactive approach ensures that we will deliver high-quality, up-to-date learning experiences that align with the latest syllabus requirements and support our students’ success.
Another significant focus in Term 4 has also been a focus on the current Year 11 cohort as they begin the work for their HSC English courses. This initial phase is critical for building the academic skills and study routines essential for success in the HSC. Students have already completed their first formal assessment task, which required not only strong analytical skills but also effective time management and commitment. We encourage our Year 11 students to maintain their organisational habits and seek support when needed, as this early foundation will be invaluable throughout their HSC journey.
I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the dedicated teachers in the English faculty. Their passion, creativity, and unwavering commitment has been key to providing another year of enriching and inspiring learning experiences for our students.
To all our students and parents, we wish you a joyful, restful, and safe holiday season. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2026 for another year of growth, discovery, and achievement in English.
