Year 5 News

Reading
In Reading, Year 5 students have started their novel study on Beowulf. Students have revisited the familiar comprehension strategies they will use when completing their novel study. These include retrieval, predicting, inferencing, summarising, visualising, making connections, comparing and contrasting and identifying new vocabulary. Students started their novel study by exploring the front cover and answering questions about who, what, when, where and why to make predictions about the story. Throughout the first couple of chapters, Year 5 students started building their vocabulary and answered inference based questions about the text, including Hrothgar’s appearance, the construction of Heorot and why characters acted as they did.

Writing
This fortnight in Writing, Year 5 students have been exploring different sentence types and using them to improve their writing. Students learnt about simple, compound and complex sentences. Simple sentences express one complete idea, compound sentences include two main clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, so, or, for, yet, nor) and complex sentences contain a main clause and a subordinate clause joined by a subordinate conjunction (because, although, if, while, when). Students practised identifying each sentence type, explaining them and writing their own examples.
‘I think that they are useful when you're writing a narrative, you can use them a lot’ - Mara 5A

In Maths, Year 5 students have begun their new unit on Volume and Capacity. Students explored the concept of capacity, learning how to measure liquid in millilitres (mL) and litres (L) and understanding which unit is the most appropriate for different containers. They practised converting between millilitres and litres and developed strategies for estimating capacity. Year 5 students participated in hands-on activities as a cohort, where they had to use jugs and cups to estimate and measure the actual capacity of different containers.

Inquiry
Over the past two weeks in Inquiry, Year 5 students have explored the difference between rules and laws. Students discussed how rules can vary depending on who makes and enforces them, such as schools or homes, while laws are official regulations that apply to everyone in the community, like driving within the speed limit. They had the opportunity to talk about who enforces rules and laws, the consequences for breaking them and why they are necessary. They applied their knowledge to scenarios including school behaviour, bedtime, littering and road safety.
“A law is when you are not meant to text or use a phone while driving and a rule is when parents rules inside a house, like don’t do stuff without your parents permission.” - Melissa 5A

Students also explored WH questions to ask and answer simple questions in Auslan, such as who, what, when, where, why and how.
