Reading

During Week 4, Year 3 students reviewed and learned new decoding strategies by practising self-correcting, where they reread a word when it didn’t sound right or if something did not make sense.

In Week 5, students completed the PAT reading assessment by carefully reading and answering comprehension questions to show their understanding. On the last day of the week, students reviewed the moral of the story. This reflection helped them connect the story’s events to real-life values.

Writing

This fortnight in Writing, Year 3 students have been learning about explanation texts. They chose an animal to research and developed an explanation describing its life cycle, using factual information and labelled drawings to explain each stage.

Students also focused on revising and editing their drafts to improve clarity, accuracy and the organisation of their ideas before publishing their final copies. Throughout the process, they demonstrated curiosity, persistence and critical thinking as they used their research and scientific vocabulary to explain how living things grow and change, making thoughtful connections to the human life cycle and applying their understanding in a meaningful way.

  Maths

This fortnight, Year 3 students concluded their fractions unit, focusing on adding fractions with common denominators. Using visual models, hands-on activities and real-world examples, they explored how fractional parts come together to make a whole.  It was wonderful to see their confidence grow throughout the sequence of learning as they strengthened their understanding of number relationships.  The Year 3 Cohort had lots of fun discovering new ways to explore math and seeing how fractions connect to everyday life.

Inquiry

This fortnight in Inquiry, Year 3 students have been exploring rules, laws, and communities. They learned to distinguish between rules and laws, identifying their similarities and differences. Students also explored what a community is, identified different groups, reflected on the ones they belong to, and considered the benefits of being part of a group.

To bring their learning to life, students created a belonging tree display, choosing a group they or their family belong to and representing it with a self-portrait, symbols, or traditions. They also wrote stories about a character discovering a group where they feel accepted and included, reflecting creatively on the role of communities in everyday life.

Social and Emotional Learning

In Social and Emotional Learning, Year 3 students focused on the importance of showing kindness to one another. They started by talking about what kindness looks like in their classroom and why it matters. Then students practised through role-playing different scenarios where they could show kindness, such as helping a friend, including others or using kind words. To wrap up the lesson, each student received their own sheet of paper and classmates wrote one kind thing about them. By the end, everyone had a page full of compliments and positive messages from their peers!

Special Event: AUSLAN Recap

Year 3 students have been learning to sign this semester. They learned to sign numbers in AUSLAN by counting along with their teacher and using hand signs to show each number. They practised signing animals by matching each animal sign to pictures and acting them out for fun. The students learned to sign school sessions by using AUSLAN to communicate sessions of our daily routine, such as recess and lunch.
