Year 2 News

Reading

In Reading, the Year 2 Cohort have learned how to make predictions and inferences to enhance their understanding of texts. They have used clues from titles, pictures, and words in the story to make thoughtful predictions about what might happen next.

As students read, they confirmed or adjusted their predictions based on new information. Year 2’s have also inferred the feelings, motives, and intentions of characters by analysing their actions, dialogue, and the events that unfold. Through class discussions and guided reading sessions, students have shared their thinking and supported their ideas with evidence from the text.

This process is helping our cohort become more confident readers who are developing the ability to think critically and interpret meaning beyond what is directly stated.

Writing

This fortnight in Year 2, students have been learning all about writing narratives; stories that take our readers on exciting adventures! They have been working hard to create their own imaginative tales, using everything they’ve learned about story structure, characters, and settings. The students used a prompt to help them plan and have been publishing their stories. They have explored the key parts of a story.

  • The beginning - introducing the characters and setting
  • The Middle – where something exciting or tricky happens
  • The End – how the problem is solved or how the story finishes.

The students have been practising how to use interesting adjectives to describe characters and places, write complete sentences with correct punctuation, use time connectives (First, Next, Then, Finally) to help the story flow, include speech marks to show when a character is talking and adding exciting openers to make our writing engaging.

‘I was writing a narrative about a seal. The seal’s name is Rose, the seal is going to be an animal in the sea. My other character is a snake and her name is Cherry. She’s going to be in the lake in my story. I have a puppy named Khloe in the story too, she is going to be on a heist.’  - Mya 2A

‘I was writing about Harper the hamster who lives in a purple sparkly castle.’ - Ava, 2C

Maths

This fortnight in Year 2, the students have been learning what multiplication means, how to use arrays and groups to solve problems, and how times tables help us in everyday life. They have explored:

  • making equal groups, for example, 3 groups of 2 is the same as 2 + 2 + 2
  • using arrays, arranging objects in rows and columns to show multiplication
  • repeated addition which is understanding that 4 × 2 means 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
  • times tables, focusing on beginning to learn the 2, 5, and 10 times tables.

Inquiry

In Inquiry the Year 2 Cohort have created a healthy eating pyramid poster to demonstrate their understanding of balanced nutrition and the importance of making healthy food choices. They have worked collaboratively to sort foods into the correct groups and have discussed how different foods contribute to overall wellbeing. In addition, students have participated in a lesson about emotions, where they have explored how different people can have different emotional responses to everyday situations.

They have shared thoughtful examples from their own experiences and have reflected on appropriate ways to manage emotions in different contexts. Through these activities, students have developed a deeper awareness of both physical and emotional health.

Social and Emotional Learning

This fortnight the Year 2 students have learnt about respect and how to be respectful in different situations. They have discussed how our actions and words can affect people in a range of ways and developed an understanding of why it is important to be respectful of others. The students have shared how they could respond respectfully in various scenarios and considered the idea of the opposite of violence being respect.

Special Event

The Year 2 students completed their last week of swimming by learning important skills in the swimming pool. They continued developing their skills in a fun and engaging environment with their peers. Students practised important water skills such as torpedo and backstroke, both with and without a kickboard. They developed confidence and technique through a variety of enjoyable activities. In the final session, they played fun water games including musical freeze, fruit salad and many more. Students enjoyed the high-energy finish to an unforgettable two-week swimming program.
