Blazeaid Assistance

On Monday the 25th of March, our VCE VM and Hands on Learning students volunteered to assist Blazeaid, an organisation which works to remove and repair fences in the wake of bushfires.

Students arrived at the site, located at the base of Mount Cole, via bus, which was generously donated by Rod McErvale and kindly driven by Tony Sutherland. They were then briefed on their task, before setting to work. Working in teams, students diligently unclipped and sorted the damaged fencing, section by section.

At the end of the day, the students efficient teamwork resulted in the demolition of six and a half kilometres of damaged fence line and a very impressed Blazeaid team, who complimented the students on their excellent work ethic. It is hoped that another day, working alongside Blazeaid, can be arranged early next term.

Thank you to all students who were involved on the day, Ms Henry for organising the event, Mr Wright and Ian Trigg for assisting on the day. Special thanks to Rod McErvale for the extremely generous donation of the bus and also to Tony Sutherland for volunteering his time to drive it.

Some of the Habits of Mind students relied upon when removing the fencing were:

It was incredibly important for students to understand what was required of them in order to complete the task at hand. Equally as important was their ability to conduct themselves as part of a team.

Given that many students had varying roles on the day, it was necessary to communicate clearly with all parties to avoid confusion and errors.
