TRIGONOMETRY PROJECT

Early in Term 3, Year 9 students completed our Trigonometry Project as part of their Mathematics studies. This project involved constructing a clinometer by hand, recording accurate measurements, working effectively as a group and applying Mathematical knowledge to the world around them. Students were tasked to explore the East Campus and measure the heights of various features of the campus, both indoors and outdoors.

Many students also explored alternative ways to gauge the heights of landmarks without the use of a clinometer or calculator.

We love running this project every year, as it gets students out of the classroom and learning practical knowledge and skills otherwise not available in a typical classroom environment. The project teaches kids many trade skills like measurement conversions, assessing the validity of calculations and margins of error.

Through this, we found that many students were able to get extremely precise measurements of the height of the school, trees around Marlborough Park and flagpoles out on the basketball courts. The Trigonometry Project is always a great part of the year, and we hope that the homemade clinometers have found their way into your homes too!
