English

The NSW English syllabus aims to "...enable students to understand and use language effectively. Students learn to appreciate, reflect on and enjoy language, and make meaning in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive, critical and powerful." The teachers at St Joseph's understand that each student is unique, with different needs and interests, and they work together in stage teams to co-plan learning sequences that respond to those needs and interests. Of course, there are ways parents and carers can support their child's learning at home. The following guides, produced by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) provide excellent information for parents and carers about what children learn in English and list many ways you can help support their learning at home.

Armidale Diocesan Mathematics Initiative (MaST)

Once again this year our whole school from K-6 are part of an Armidale Diocesan Mathematics Initiative known as the MaST Project. Please see the information below to assist your child at home.

Kindergarten - Time

Initially, children will learn about time through using language such as yesterday, today and tomorrow and through comparing the time it takes to complete activities. I can clap my hands three times while you throw a ball in the air and catch it.

Record special events on a calendar and talk about how many days or weeks before the event.

Watch the short video below and discuss the days of the week.

Stage 1 - Whole Number

Informative video for parents to support mathematics in the real world.

Everyday Maths - At the supermarket

This week, and until the end of term, we will be turning our learning towards Whole Number.  We are working on representing different numbers in many different ways, counting by ones, tens and hundreds, and some of us are even practising counting into the thousands!  We have lots of fun activities planned for the coming weeks. We are lucky to have so many skilled, helpful adults in the room during literacy and numeracy!

Stage 2 - Addition

Here are two problems Stage 2 to get you thinking about number! Have fun!
