12 VCE-VM Literacy Incursion

As part of our Year 12's current Literacy unit, which centres around resilience, we ran an incursion with the St Kilda football club, where they presented an interactive session on mental fitness. Two players, Serene Watson and Grace Kelly, spoke to the year 12 students. They talked about the causes of stress and how, for professional footballers, improving mental fitness is as essential as improving physical fitness. They then gave an entire range of practical strategies to deal with stress. These included progressive muscle relaxation and box breathing that the students can use daily. They also explained the ‘Red Brain Blue Brain’ theory and discussed how we can do better by focusing on the present and what we can control rather than worrying about the past or the future.

The students enjoyed the incursion and should be able to use this talk as a catalyst for their projects.

Melbourne Career Expo

In Week 7, all VCE VM students traveled to Melbourne Showgrounds to experience the Melbourne Career Expo. Students were exposed to Registered Training Organisations such as AFL Training Center, Melbourne Polytech, ADF, Manufacturing, Construction, and many more. Students made the most of this time, talking to industry experts, collecting information, pamphlets, and lots of free stuff.

Then and Now...

One of the biggest challenges (and there have been many) in the Year 11 VM program was changing the attitudes of 90 students about the importance and 'real life' relevance of adhering to a school uniform policy. So, in Term 1, the focus was to have all students in the correct uniform. Thank you to all students and families for their commitment to consistency!

Then

Now

BREATHE… one, two, three, four…hold…exhale!

As part of Unit 1 in Personal Development Skills - Emotional Intelligence, students were exposed to all strategies for self-regulation and self-awareness. As we prepare them for the real world, they need to understand the importance of working effectively with others and controlling emotions in a professional environment. One of their strategies was taking part in a yoga lesson with Betina from the Art of Balance, gaining a better understanding of the benefits of natural therapies.

Namaste!

Good Neighbour Project

During week 8, students were given a presentation by Fusion, who introduced them to the upcoming Good Neighbour Project.

Students came to understand that Fusion Mornington Peninsula is a grassroots community that lives alongside people experiencing homelessness, encouraging our Year 11 students to connect deeper into their humanity.

This incursion was about realigning students with the more remarkable story of the local neighborhood and, in term 2, to raise funds to donate to the Good Neighbour Project, hopefully making a slight difference to youth homelessness on the peninsula.
