Congratulations! We WON the Sculpture Award!!!!

Award:  Zart Art Sculpture and 3D Art, Winner - Primary - St Francis de Sales

We received the wonderful news that our school has been chosen to receive the Zart Art Sculpture and 3D Art Award in the Primary Section at the Statewide Catholic Education Week Creative Arts Exhibition 2024.

Students from class AM 2023 created the winning artwork – a Class Possum Skin Cloak inspired by the Indigenous traditional Possum Skin Cloaks worn at cultural ceremonies.

The students will be accepting the award this Sunday March 17th at the exhibition held at the Catholic Leadership Centre.

Congratulations to those students and all the senior students that created a class cloak last year. Also congratulations to the students who also had their work exhibited in the exhibition – Evie, Ayrkiera, Tiahna and Lucas.

Senior students reflected on our theme of In The Light Of Christ this term and created a circular design that represents the presence of Jesus in their lives. The finished designs are vibrant and joyful and will be used to create a permanent cross for the school. They will be on display near LS1 this week for everyone to enjoy.

Junior students have been exploring the element of line in paper sculptures and pattern in printmaking. The students enjoyed discovering the possibilities of manipulating a 2D strip of paper into a wonderful 3D sculpture. Following this they pressed lines into an A5 foam board and were amazed when we “pulled” colourful prints from these. We then used block out techniques to create a word or shape that also represented The Light of Christ.

MENTAL MATHS AT SFS - Week 7 & 8

The strategies children have been focusing on this week and for next week are:

YEAR LEVEL

STRATEGY and SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICING AT HOME

Foundation

Count all using one to one correspondence

-Practice counting a collection of objects at home up to 10 or 20. Count your toys, your toys cars, pieces of Lego, pasta etc. As you count touch each of the objects and then have a go at recording how many there are by writing the numeral.

Year 1

Counting on when adding.

What does it mean to count on?

'Count on' in Maths is a mental math strategy used to add numbers. When using this strategy children start with the larger number and “count on” the amount that is to be added to find the total.

For example, if the number sentence is 4 + 3, the student will identify 4 as the larger number and count on three more—“4 … 5, 6, 7”. The answer or the sum is 7.

Practice counting on at home by grabbing two collections of items or by asking mum or dad to write down some number sentences for you to solve. E.g 5+3      7+ 4

Year 2

Big doubles 6-10

Practice quickly recalling doubles 6-10. (e.g. double 6 is 12, double 7 is 14 etc) Children need to learn these by heart so that they can recall them automatically.

Year 3

Subtracting to a decuple

What is a decuple? In very basic Maths terms a decuple is a group of 10 or the next group of 10/10 more

So when we subtract to a decuple, we are taking away an amount to reach a group of 10, for example 35-5 is 30 (30 is the decuple).

To practice this ask your child to subtract a number between 1-9 to a decuple.

For example:

37-7

86-6

124-4

59-9

Year 4 & 5

Multiplication & Division Facts

Practice your Multiplication & Division Facts up to 10x10 at home each night.

Year 6

Count Forwards and Backwards by 10's and 100's from any number

Start at any number and ask your child to count backwards or forwards by 10 or 100. For example 5 500, 5 600, 5700, 5800 etc

How big can their starting number be?

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Grade 5/6 Sport

Our Grade 5/6's participated in their Interschool Sport Training.  It was an opportunity to reflect on their performance and work on what they could improve tactically and how to work better as a team.  The weather was pleasant and the students enjoyed themselves.  It was great to see the leadership from some of the students and voice their opinions to their peers.

Grade 3/4 Sport

We had our Grade 3/4's participating in their Interschool Sport Rotations. The students participated in a different sport, therefore, so they are familiar with all of the different Interschool Sports.  Also, when the students are in Grade 5/6, they know what to expect and they are not overwhelmed with the situation of competing against other schools.

GRADE 6 BIKE EDUCATION

Next week our Grade 6s will continue their 2nd level of Bike Education: Pathways. They will continue their Pathways lessons out in our community. Students will need to bring their bikes and helmets to school Friday morning and leave in front of their Learning Space in the morning. If parents are dropping off bicycles, students are able to leave them in the bike shed for the duration of the program. If it is raining heavily, please leave bicycles at home.

For the remainder of the sessions students will be using the skills they have learnt, riding on pathways in the community. I would like to say a big thank you to the three parents that are assisting us with the Grade 6 Bike Ed Program. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

AFL COME AND PLAY PROGRAM AT SFS

We have an exciting opportunity for your children. AFL Victoria are working closely with our local Junior Football Club and they are running a Come and Play Program at our school that focuses on providing a safe and inclusive introduction to AFL while learning about the basic skills of the game.

To provide this opportunity, there will be a FREE AFL Clinic run at St Francis De Sales on Wednesday March 27th from 3.30 – 4.30pm. Parent participation is encouraged and you will need to bring and remain with your child at the clinic, which will be run on our school oval.

All year levels are welcome to attend and to provide your child with this opportunity you will need to scan the QR Code on the flyer below and register your child.

Please note, your child does not need any special clothes and on the day they will be able to wear their sports uniform to school so that they can comfortably participate in the program. They will also need to bring their water bottle and hat.

This information has also been provided via Operoo.

I look forward to seeing many students and parents joining us for the Come and Play Program!

SFS CROSS COUNTRY

On the last day of term, which will be Thursday March 28th, the whole school will be involved in our traditional Cross Country which will be held at school. We will be looking for the winning House as well as the winners for each level in the Juniors and age group in the Seniors. We will also be identifying the Senior students who will qualify to attend District Cross Country in Term 2.

Please save the date so you can come and support your child. We will also be asking for parent assistance on the day. Remember to assist you must have a current Working with Children Check registered with the school office.

SFS HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY & COLOUR EXPLOSION

Thursday March 28th, 2024

The SFS House Cross Country is on the last day of this term, Thursday March 28th and it will be held at school. Seniors will participate from 9.00-10.00 and Juniors from 10.00-11.00. The track will start behind LS2 and go along the side of the basketball courts, down the front of LS3 and LS1, around the rainbow playground and out the gate near the front of the school. They will then run across the front of the school and through the gates near the hall, across the front of the hall and back to the oval. Gates to the car park will be closed and there will be parents supervising along the track.

Foundation:                  One lap around the track

Grade 1:                       One lap around the track

Grade 2:                       One lap around the track

8 year olds:                  Two laps around the track

(This race will be mixed both boys and girls)

9/10 year olds:             Two laps around the track

11 year olds:                 Three laps around the track

12/13 year olds:           Three laps around the track

If parents need to enter the school they will need to use the pedestrian gate near the rainbow playground. Please use this gate only. Parents who are attending to support their child, there will be a designated area for you to sit behind the Hall or behind LS2 near the sandpit. This is a great spot to view the start and finish of the races as well as the colour explosion. Please feel free to bring chairs to sit on. We ask that parents remsin in this area for the safety of our students.

There will be separate races for boys and girls in each age or grade level except the 8 year old race where girls and boys will run together. Students placing in the first ten will be awarded a ribbon and points for their House and those who are first in each race will have their names engraved on the perpetual school trophies that are kept in our trophy cabinet.

Students will be required to wear their sports uniform as they will be running, but we hope that they will wear a t-shirt that is in their house colour. They may also accessorise in their house colour. E.g. hair ribbons, socks, sweat bands, hair spray… They will also need to bring their drink bottle and hat. Please also remember to update your child’s profile on Operoo and give permission for your child to participate in Cross Country.

Students will then also participate in the Colour Explosion. Please ensure your child is wearing a t-shirt you don’t mind getting colour on, though from experience I can assure you the colour does wash off. Please remember to register your child online for the Colour Explosion and donate to Parents & Friends fundraising.

Teresa House - Blue

MacKillop House – Yellow

Bosco House – Red

Patrick House – Green

We will then have assembly after 1st lunch to announce the winning house and the winners for each race. Mini Vinnies will also make their pledge to join and receive their badges. Sliming of staff will also happen at the end of this assembly.

If there are any parents able to assist with the House Cross Country and have their Working with Children Check which is registered with the school, please contact Giuliana on gfaiola@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au or complete the section for parent assistance on the Operoo form. Senior Cross Country will take place from 9-10 and Junior Cross Country from 10-11.
