Year 3

By Steph Archbold

Hello everyone

This fortnight in Grade 3, we have been doing lots of interesting things!

Mathematics

We are continuing our work with mental math strategies, which is a focus for this term. This picture shows some students working out different ways of getting to 99 using lots of different equations. This activity helps students to work backwards, apply their knowledge, challenge each other, work together, and extend their learning in all sorts of different and creative ways. It was fantastic to see students coming to their own conclusions about equations and having 'a-ha!' moments.

R.E.

In R.E. we completed our Reconciliation Unit and have begun our second Unit for the term which focuses on Christian Values. The students were very engaged exploring and expressing things they were thankful for.

"We were joined by students from other classes as Steph and Mrs. Vaz led us in our learning for Reconciliation. We learnt about Sacraments and why they are important. It was fun having other students come into our classroom!" - Grade 3 student

Cooking

We are continuing with our cooking sessions that link into one of our English Units which looks at procedural texts. So far this term we have made pizzas and muffins.

In the garden

An important part of St Mary's is our garden. With a window of beautiful weather, we joined Mr. O in the vegetable garden to help out with some weeding. The great thing about gardening is that we learn things that we can take back into the classroom and other areas of our life:

"We needed to get out all of the bad strawberries so when it is spring there will be good and healthy strawberries to eat. We had to put hay on the vegie patch. We swept the ground because all of the hay was everywhere and we needed to harvest the vegetables, so we could grow all new things in spring. We were being as calm as we could. We were focusing on being calm and respectful."  - Grade 3 student

Bushrangers Incursion

A whole-school event, the Grade 3's enjoyed working with the F-2's to find out about pumping water, throwing spears, eating mushrooms (including why not to), building shelters that protect from the rain, and making fire with a 'ferro rod'!

Thanks Bushrangers!! We loved it!
