School of Innovation

So much to celebrate halfway through Term 3!

Congratulations to all of our St Anne’s College students, especially our SOI students for their participation in our School Athletics. There were so many wonderful moments of joy, triumph and resilience, that were brilliant to behold and witness! Well done!

A reminder to speak with your student/s regarding their current assessments and what they are undertaking in each subject. Ask them to show you their iPads and Google Classrooms so you can understand and experience what your student/s are currently working on, investigating and learning.

Please ensure devices are fully charged each day as per our ICT agreement, so they may best participate in and engage with their learning.

Thank you!

A message from Lillian Richardson (Year 9)

I'm thrilled to share my unforgettable experience at the Girl Power in Engineering & IT camp, hosted by the University of Melbourne. As a Year 9 participant, I delved into the world of engineering and IT during a three-night camp in the July term holidays. The camp brimmed with engaging activities that ignited my passion for STEM fields. Working with Microbits, which are miniature programmable computers, we explored the basics of coding and created innovative projects. Additionally, we got the chance to work in Melbourne University’s labs, where we did workshops regarding civil engineering.

Beyond the workshops, the camp offered unique experiences like having lunch with the college's racing team and gaining insights into the role of engineering in motorsports. On the last night, there was a panel evening. The panel featured successful women in STEM. Moreover, at the Telstra Creator Space, I had a fantastic time working with drones, scanning equipment, and even building a hydraulic arm. I also got to chat with surveyors, learning about their job. As well as this, I had the opportunity to meet two university professors.

Overall, this camp was a life-changing experience that further fuelled my passion for STEM and opened my eyes to a world of exciting possibilities.

Thank you Lil, we are so very proud of you!

Important Uniform Information

A reminder that all School of Innovation students are required to wear their academic uniform items each day, except for sports days or other nominated days when their sports uniform items can be worn. Please ensure your student is in their full academic uniform. If this is not possible on a particular day, please send a note, including the date your student will be able to be in full school uniform.

A dress code, in particular a uniform, provides a visual connection to identify students as members of St Anne’s College community. The way a uniform is worn makes a statement about our college and it represents the fact that the student is a part of the community.  The benefits of a school uniform include:

• Allows all students to feel equal

• Helps prevent bullying and competition on the basis of clothing

• Ensures students appearance reflects the expectations of St Anne’s College

• Enhances the profile and identity of the College and its students in the wider community

• Strengthens the spirit of community within St Anne’s College

• Enhances individual student safety and group security

• Ensured all students are dressed safely and appropriately for school activities

• Encourages students to develop pride in their appearance

• Prepares students for the expectations in workplaces

• Encourages students to present themselves appropriately for a particular role

Thank you for your support.

National Day Against Violence & Bullying

Friday the 18th of August is National Day against Violence & Bullying. At St. Anne's College Kialla, we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all our students, staff, and families. This event gives us the opportunity to stand together as a united force against violence and bullying, spreading awareness and promoting kindness.

During this week students within the School Of Innovation have been involved in important conversations with their Pastoral Group Leaders within their morning pastoral groups. These conversations have allowed our students to recognise the impact that Bullying & Violence can have on individuals, whilst raising awareness on strategies to prevent and call out any of these actions. Through our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support here at the College we promote the values of.

  • We Respect Everyone and Everything
  • We Always do our best
  • We Help others to succeed

These values have also underpinned the conversations we have been having at the college this week to support the National Day Against Violence & Bullying. Perhaps you would like to also engage in conversations at home with your children to support this day and further raise awareness.

Year 7 students are exploring ‘Communities at Prayer’ and looking at Prayer and Spirituality, and exploring the many facets and aspects of this. Year 7 students have analysed and written a variation of ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ and the ‘St Anne’s Prayer’.

In English, Year 7 students are continuing their study of Anh Do’s book “The Happiest Refugee”.

Year 8 students are exploring ‘Healthy Eating Case Studies’  and analysing information provided, answering questions and making assessments and providing advice and recommendations based on the information provided. Students have also finished an assessment based on ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ and what makes us who we are, our similarities and our differences.

Year 8 students are continuing with their text study of Parvana.

Following on from our previous il giornale passages, Year 9 students have had more guest speakers in to discuss their careers, pathways and jobs as part of the Year 9 Inquiry "Oh! The Places You'll Go!" This week, we have had Mardie, a Travel Agent; Jacqui, a Prison Guard; and Colleen, Cameron, and Emma, all Real Estate agents with Cardamone Real Estate in to speak to our students. Our students welcomed these guests with open minds and curious questions, and took a lot away from these discussions.

If you would like to come into the college to speak to our Year 9 students about your career/pathway, please send an email to Year 9 Pedagogy leader Adam Zito azito@sackialla.catholic.edu.au

Year 9 students have also been exploring the jobs and occupations of their family members. They are investigating what skills, qualifications and experiences are required for these positions, as well as what is required to undertake such work.

What an incredible opportunity this continues to be for our Year 9's! Thank you again to our amazing visitors and volunteers, and Year 9 staff, for their contributions.

Year 9's are also exploring Popes and Saints in Religion, and Plot Diagrams in English.
