Sam and Charley both travelled to Canberra to represent Team Vic in Cross Country. CEPS are extremely proud of both students who worked hard and showed commitment and determination.
Sam finished 3rd and Charley finished 25th.
Below is a summary of Sam's experience.
My run in Canberra
On Thursday the 24th of August I drove up to Canberra with my mum and brother. It was a long eight-hour car trip with lots of stops. When we got to the hotel room, I was absolutely exhausted as I fell on the big bed.
We ate toast for dinner and went to sleep. We had a giant day tomorrow and wanted sleep.
Once we woke up the next morning, we got ready and set off to walk the 2km track with Team Vic. When we walked the track, it was a smooth dirt path with real wild Kangaroos but to make it a bit harder they put hay bales down on the track. Then once we got back, we got badges that you can trade for other states with but keep one for yourself which is what I did. After a while of trading the opening ceremony started. We all sat in our teams as it went on, I thought it would take a long time but surprisingly it didn’t take long at all . Then after that we went back to the hotel for the night and rested because we had another big day tomorrow.
I woke up got my running gear on and got to the track to start warming up. After warming up I went to the Team Vic tent and got my number pinned on. I was checked off the list and they said they took the hay bales off the track. Then I walked to the start line and when the gun went off, I set my pace then when I was coming to the end I sprinted as hard as I could and kept pushing. When they started giving the medals to the winners, they called me up and I got a gold team medal because I was the third 10-year-old multi class across the line and the fifth out of all the multi class kids.
On Sunday I saw a para-athlete called Chad Perris at a cafe and showed him my medal. Next, we went to the Australian Institute of Sport, and I actually saw the real shoes, singlet, and shorts Chad ran in. I also saw where all of the athlete's train. There was this interactive area with lots of sports things like a mini basketball court, kayaking, virtual soccer and footy field, and an arm-wrestling game. Then I went to a museum with Team Vic and looked at all of the areas.
The next day I had a relay race which was a 1k run which I did very well in because I got a bronze medal. My mum said I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. After all the other races I sat down with my team and the coach started talking. Finally, after that I was all done it was the last day of Team Vic until next year if I make it. We headed to go Go-Karting which I loved, and I was super good at as soon as I got on the track.
This was a great experience I made a few friends and did a really good job at racing. I really hope I make it next year as well.
Grade 1's attended the Melbourne Zoo on Wednesday to help them write animal information reports in English. The students had a lot of fun exploring the grounds and saw plenty of animals including lions, tigers, frogs, seals, birds, orangutang and elephants! It was a very exciting day and the students showed our CEPS values beautifully. We had lots of sleepy children on the bus trip home. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped on the day, we couldn’t have done it without you!
