We have some very talented students at Hillsmeade Primary School. Many students entered the Wild At Art competition for National Threatened Species Day. Have a look at some of their work below. Well done to the entrants, and good luck with the competition. Winners will be announced shortly.
Our Hillsmeade Marine Ambassadors recently attended a coastal workshop held by the Dolphin Research Institute. Students learnt about invasive species of flora (plants) and fauna (animals) and how these invasive species threaten our native plants and wildlife.
They weeded nature reserves, listened to experts from Parks Victoria and got to meet Lionel Lauch who is a Gunditjmara Kirrae Wurrung-Bundjalung man who spoke with us about Indigenous culture and the important role plants and animals have in our world.
Ava, Tegan, Kyson, Sara and Miss Dunstan were lucky enough to wear Lionel's story blanket, this 'blanket' is made from possum fur and sections have been added throughout his life. The skin of the fur has been burnt with markings to indicate different parts of his life.
Ava was lucky enough to experience a Yidaki music vibration. The Yidaki (Didgeridoo as it is commonly known now) is one of the oldest known musical instruments. The Yidaki produces low frequency sound that we can hear and actual vibrations that we can feel, especially if the end of the instrument is placed close to the body.
Come and enjoy the fun and festivities of the Doveton Show. Be sure to drop in and visit the Sustainability and Environment Display for free activities and information.
