Learning, growing and celebrating together...
Dear Sacred Heart Kew Families,
There goes my hero, watch him as he goes
There goes my hero, He's ordinary (My Hero - Foo Fighters 1997)
Last Sunday we celebrated our Dads’ (our heroes) and all the special men in our lives. And over the last fortnight at Sacred Heart Kew, we have welcomed and had the pleasure of spending a little more time together with these important figures, with children buying special gifts to express their gratitude and love, delighting in sharing their learning with their heroes, and our Dads’ and special men enjoying lunch together, and a few stories from Andy Lee last Friday down at The Glenferrie Hotel. Spring has sprung, footy finals have begun, and the days are now lighter for longer. Let’s hope the weather comes to the party soon!
Everyone has their own opinion, take or meaning of different songs. My extremely simplistic take on the Foo Fighters ‘My Hero,’ is that you don’t have to be someone special or extraordinary to be a hero, especially a child’s hero. If you’re a child’s hero, then you’re special no matter what, and here at Sacred Heart Kew, we have a whole school full of heroes. Our Dads’, our heroes, they can and do GREAT things.
They also (not an exhaustive list, perhaps a little general, and certainly not limited to):
Play their music far too loudly
Don’t need directions as they believe they already know the way
Provide long winded directions of their own
Retell countless never ending stories to anyone who will listen
Mow the lawn like it’s a cricket pitch or lawn bowls green
Cook a decent BBQ, salads not so much
Are often the first teacher of many lessons learned
Hand out extra pocket money, just don’t tell your mother
Are happy to tackle a DIY project (sans instructions) with varying degrees of success
Are not keen on turning the heating on, insisting that putting a jumper on will suffice
End up being the best friend of the dog that they didn’t want in the first place
It was my privilege and pleasure, and I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with our Sacred Heart Kew Dads’ last Friday at the Men’s Lunch. It was a fantastic opportunity to chat with our children’s heroes in a relaxed and friendly environment. In every conversation that I had with our SHK Men, the one constant was that they believe that our children are the real heroes at our school, with our fathers’ eyes and faces lighting up whenever they spoke about their children, their pride and admiration evident in every story they told about their special little people.
I am sure that all our Sacred Heart Kew Dads’ were spoiled rotten last Sunday and enjoyed their special day. A school community full of heroes, regardless of who believes is the ‘actual’ real hero, is a pretty good place to be.

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend. Good luck to all those still supporting their beloved football team. May they kick long and straight for you.
Kind Regards,
