Library Lessons this Month - Reading is Magic
Children’s Book Week runs from 17 - 23 August. The theme is ‘Reading is Magic’. Students have been investigating the shortlisted books for the Book of the Year Awards.
In Library lessons students have been listening to the books on the shortlist for the categories most appropriate to their age group. Foundation - Year 2 have listened to the Early Childhood books (0-8 years). Our Year 3 and 4 students have listened to the Picture Book category for children aged 0 to 18 years. The Year 5 and 6 students have listened to parts of the books on the Younger Readers category (ages 7-12 years).
Our youngest students have had a great time listening to stories about gymnastics, animals and making gardens even where plants can’t grow (on concrete).
After listening to ‘Gymnastica Fantastica’ our Foundation to Year 2 students made ribbon streamers to practise some gymnastics skills.
The Picture Book category has books which really fit the theme of ‘Reading is Magic’ very well. Students enjoyed listening to stories about imagining being a horse or turning into a wolf at midnight, even one with a bird who has arms. Each story has its message. Some are about belonging or feeling left out, some are about dealing with bullies.
Our Year 5 and 6 students have enjoyed funny stories about pigeons with super powers, a story about a girl who helps dogs in rescue shelters and a story based on the town of Old Jindabyne which was flooded in 1967 as part of the Snowy Mountain Hydro-electric Scheme.
This week students have cast their vote to select a winner in each category before the CBCA Judges announce the winners on Friday 16 August at noon. Our display with the magic hat and stars on the wall is filling up with sparkling stars as the votes are cast.
Book Character Parade
To celebrate Children’s Book Week we are having an out of uniform day on Friday 23 August. All students are welcome to dress up on the day as a character from a book.
Our annual Book Character Parade for Foundation - Year 6 students will take place in the Brigidine Centre from 9:10am to 9:55am. Parents and caregivers are most welcome to come along and share in this fun morning. F-6 students will walk around the hall to music, showing their costume efforts to other classes in F-6 and the parents and caregivers who attend.
All students and staff are asked to come dressed as a book character or something related to our ‘Reading is Magic’ theme. There is no cost involved, just a chance to have fun with stories, books and dress ups.
