Dumplings 😋
Last Friday we had gardening and in gardening we made mushroom dumplings out of mushrooms grown by students at school in grades 3-6. We have been learning all about different types of mushrooms and fungi in Gardening.
First thing in the morning we found out we were making dumplings and that we’d get to eat them, we were very excited! We had to go to the kitchen in the Babajen and properly wash our hands. Emily told us that she’d made a dumpling mix by cutting up the mushrooms everyone grew and mixing in some spring onions, cabbage, garlic and ginger.
Then she told us everything that we needed to know and demonstrated how to fold them. Next we went off and had a go at making some dumplings. There were too many people to fit around the kitchen bench, so we needed an extra table.
First, we had to lay out the dough on our chopping boards and spoon a small amount of the mixture in the middle. We had to put a little bit of water on the dough to make it stick together. The people working on the extra table decided we would make a shop called Dulums dumplings where all the kids were the chefs, Emily was head chef and Kim was the CEO/owner, waitress and everyone's boss. In no time at all we had finished making about 150 dumplings! Time really does go fast when you're having fun. We all finished and went back to the classroom to complete a science week quiz while Emily cooked the dumplings. When they were cooked we all got to go back to Emily and try one of our creations. Surprisingly they did NOT taste like mushrooms but some sort of meat? A super good vegan substitute!
VSSS Rehearsal
By Tayah Bamblett
On Friday all the year sixes who are participating in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular (VSSS) came to the office filled with joy and excitement. It was time for another mega hub rehearsal. This is where all the schools get together to practise with the choreographers.
After this rehearsal will be the practices at John Cain Arena, getting ready for show day!
We got on the bus to pick up Ivanhoe East and headed to Maroondah nets. All you could feel on the way there was joy.
When we got there Kim went to go get our props and costumes. We sat and ate some food.
We got into our first outfits for a dance to Missirlou, these were not our favourite costumes but we were excited to finally have some! We had to practise changing all our costumes and doing our dances. After Missirlou, we did our dances to Don’t Stop Me Now, The Only Way Is Up, Rapper’s Delight (this is our favourite dance and has a really brightly coloured costume!) Hold Back The River, Joy and Happiness. We have learnt 7 dances all together.
It was so exciting watching our whole quadrant dance, there were so many people dancing together and after this it will nearly be show time!
My favourite part of doing the VSSS has been all the practices and learning all the dances.
I’m especially excited because Magenta, Zannie and I get to be a part of the First Nations ensemble and do a special dance.
We can’t for the show!
