Indonesian Study Tour 2024

Our MECS group of 14 Secondary students and 4 staff headed to Indonesia for 13 days over July/August. What a wonderful time away we had! Our itinerary covered a variety of locations and experiences across the islands of Bali and Java. We saw tourist sights and attractions, met local people, visited three schools, spent time with students at a local Bible College, travelled on planes and trains and finished in the busy metropolis of Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.

Students learning Indonesian in Years 9 and 10 had lots of opportunities to see and experience how Indonesians live and observe the differences in daily life, traditions, and culture across the various locations we visited. We also enjoyed the warm tropical climate and a variety of Indonesian foods.

It was great to see students face the challenges of adapting to a new environment with courage and resilience. There was a sense of common purpose and opportunities for teamwork as we travelled together, helped to run a Sunday school program, participated in sporting events and traditional games and feeling a deep sense of connection to local people in practicing speaking Indonesian language.

This extraordinary chance to represent MECS overseas was undoubtedly a life-changing experience that students are continuing to reflect upon since returning home.

A Few Thoughts from our Student Travellers:

I feel more open to new experiences, and challenges don't scare me as much as they used to. And I find myself wanting to converse with total strangers more.

Lily B (Year 10)

Indonesians are the happiest people I've ever met and they are so kind and caring so it made me want to learn Indonesian so much more and to embrace the culture and appreciate other people’s backgrounds.

Josiah M (Year 10)

This trip has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for different cultures and the Indonesian language. It has also made me thankful for my house, family, school, and experiences.

Emily P (Year 10)
