News from the Primary School
In exciting news, MECS hosted their very first Rotary Primary School Speech Competition. Students from different schools in the area, choose a topic from a list provided, and write, practise, and deliver a speech in front of 3 judges and within strict time limits. This year, there were 10 representatives from 5 different schools, including our own Amelie (Year 6) and Harin (Year 5).
As you would know, public speaking can often be the very last thing many people like to do, however, these students were exemplary in their diction, enunciation, projection of voice, facial expressions, animation, and use of props, which all came together to create a very entertaining evening. The audience was amazed at the calibre of the speeches and the confidence in which our young people presented themselves.
After much deliberation, we are proud to announce, Amelie was placed second from 3 successful positions. Amelie’s speech, ‘If You Could Have One Superpower, What Would It Be?’ – spoke about the ultimate superpower within us all – the ability to create a ripple effect with a kind word, gesture, or deed that can change even just one person’s day for the better. Amelie will now present to the Rotary Club members for the Grand Final in November. We would also like to congratulate Harin for her very humorous speech, ‘A Much Needed Invention’, the ‘Ani-talk’, which allowed humans to speak to animals, and possibly warn rabbits about nightly fox patrols!
Rotary do an incredible job of providing humanitarian services both locally and globally to advance goodwill and peace around the world. Public speaking builds confidence and motivates others to be critical thinkers and proactive citizens. We know we’ll see Amelie and Harin again throughout their schooling and hope they’ve encouraged their younger peers to put themselves forward for this wonderful competition.

Junior Primary students had the privilege of a visit from the Year 10 Scripture class and their teacher Mr Mahoney. The Year 10 Scripture class had been tasked with the challenge of creating a picture story book based on a Bible story that was aimed at young children. The Junior Primary students were fortunate to have these stories read to them by the Year 10 authors. They also enjoyed some games, colouring activities and even a dress up interactive Bible story. The Echidna class would like to say a big thank you to all their new Year 10 friends and to their teacher Mr Mahoney for a wonderful and fun-filled visit! We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Bible from the perspective of the Year 10 students.
