Visual Arts

Over the past few weeks, students have been exploring the world of art through textiles.  We have been practicing patience and perseverance, tying different types of knots for a purpose, and working on our fine motor to thread our sewing needles.

Foundation level students have been learning about weaving, understanding the purpose of stitching in art. They have designed and produced some very creative ice cream cones which they have stitched together.  Year 1/2 students have been designing their own tote bags. Year 3/4 students have created some scary and adorable plushie monsters, and year 5/6’s students have created food plushies using a variety of stitches. Our artists have been exploring different functional and decorative sewing techniques and processes.

August Art Attack

A huge congratulations Lillie, Grace, Cienna, Dakota, Violet, Rose, Kooper, Gemma, Ashleigh and Hunter, whose art works were featured in the Crib Point August Art Attack. Student’s artwork was grandly displayed to the community alongside many talented local artists. An extra special congratulations to Rose and Lillie, who both received “Special Mention” awards for their artwork. Well done!

Congratulations again to all students who particpated. We were all really proud of your efforts. A special congratulations to those who have now won through to Division in early Term Four.

Swimming Lessons

It was great to see so many of our students participate in the swimming lessons which are part of the PE curriculum.

What a great gift to give your child - the ability to swim and be water safe. Consider the amount of times they will be in and around water environments during their lives - boating, fishing, surfing or just cooling down. Being water safe and competent is such an important skill.

Consider though this as an introduction if your child does not already participate in lessons. The five lessons conducted as part of the school program has opened the door or at least provided the platform. Now is the perfect time to continue these lessons and make sure your child is water safe moving forward.

I reflect on this looking at this picture of my son from a recent surfing trip. His whole social life and enjoyment of life would look totally different without the ability to SWIM.

Week 9 - September 12th Rugby Gala Day

This event takes place tomorrow. Looking forward to a great day and we will share highlights in our next edition of the Bittern Buzz.

Auslan

Foundation

The Foundation students have been learning about the signs for family members over the last few weeks. They have learnt the signs for family, mother, father, sister, brother, cousin, uncle, aunty, grandmother, grandfather and step. We have learnt these signs through the use of games, activities and Auslan story books about family lunches.

The next step for the foundation students is to practise signing the numbers 11 to 19 and the signs for posing questions about a students age.

Grade One and Two

During Auslan sessions the Grade One and Two students have continued working on learning to sign the numbers 1 to 100. When signing two digit numbers there is a hand movement that can take some time to master, and I am pleased to say that the Grade One and Two students are becoming quite good at doing so.

Over the next few weeks we will be learning to sign a popular story book titled: The Very Cranky Bear.

Grade Three to Six

The Grade Three to Six students have worked hard to communicate through sign about sporting events and incorporating those signs with others about being injured or hurt and seeking assistance. There has been some interesting discussions about the structure of communicating in Auslan as it can be quite different to how we structure our spoken sentences.

The next step for them is to revisit the basic household signs that we have learnt and add to these by learning the signs for other household/ classroom items.

Performing Arts

The junior classes have been working on their beat and rhythmic skills in music over the last few weeks. The preps in particular are expert in listening to music and identifying the beat and rhythm in simple songs. We also started learning some bush dances, including the Mexican Hat Dance and Strip the Willow.

The middle and senior classes are becoming very proficient on the recorder. The student's ability to read music has improved dramatically and we can now play individual pieces as well as accompanying our 'Rock Recorder' tracks.  We are building up our repertoire of songs and currently our favourite song is 'Count on Me' by Bruno Mars.
