Grade 1 Community News

We only have a few weeks left of the term, but our Grade 1 Students have been working harder than ever! A huge thank you for your support on Book Day. The Grade 1’s looked amazing, and we appreciate our parents and grandparents that popped in on Book Day to see the Grade 1’s in action.

Here is a look into what we have been getting up to in our Grade 1 community over the past fortnight.

Reading

In Reading, we have started unpacking our new topic of Early Australian Explorers! We have been identifying what it means to be an explorer and understanding why different explorers came to Australia. Students have begun looking into Willem Janszoon and Abel Tasman and will continue to learn about more explorers who made their way to Australia. Students have been sharing their learning through drawing, writing and retelling stories on an iPad.

Writing

In Writing, we have been working on persuasive writing where students are learning how to express their opinions and convince others. They’ve been crafting simple arguments to persuade their readers about things they care about, like why recess and lunch should get extended or why a certain snack should be eaten more often. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they come up with ideas and use their new skills to write persuasive pieces. Their creativity and effort in convincing their readers have been truly impressive!

Maths

In Maths, we’ve been diving into an exciting unit all about money. We’ve started to explore the value of different coins and notes. Our students have had a blast creating their own little shops, where they’ve learned to set prices for items and use play money to make purchases. They’ve practised identifying the value of different coins and notes, and learned how to count and use money in a fun, practical way. It’s been wonderful to see their progress in understanding money, and we’re eager to continue building on these skills with more engaging activities in the coming weeks!

Vocabulary / Morphology

In Vocabulary, we have been able to demonstrate our understanding of vocabulary words from our new serial text ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ by Florence and Richard Atwater in different ways. The words we have focused on have been thoughtful, insist, tremendous and squirming. We have shown this by saying the definition of these words, using them in a sentence and including them in a game of charades.

In Morphology, we have been looking at the suffix ‘ed’ and how it changes the meaning of words. We have shown our learning about this through activities such as picture matching and group bingo.
