Grade 5 Community News
Dear Grade 5 families,
We are now over the halfway stage in term three and the students are working very hard on all class tasks. The students are looking forward to the Sovereign Hill excursion in the final week of term.
Reading
This week, the students have started our Reading unit based on ‘Colonial Australia’ and the ‘Eureka Stockade’. The students have learnt about the indigenous perspective on the colonisation of Australia and have learnt what life was like on the goldfields. This unit of work will help prepare the students for their visit to Sovereign Hill in the final week of term.
Writing
This week the students began the week by using and learning about sentence summaries which are used to help summarise the main idea of a piece of text. The students also created imaginative diary entries based on what life would be like on the Australian goldfields. The five senses were used as a base to create and expand on the ideas of the students.
Mathematics
In week 8 and 9 grade 5 students will learn about time. Week 8 will focus on a refresher on reading time to the minute on an analogue clock, converting between units of time, converting between AM and PM, and learning to understand 24-hour time. Learning to understand the concept of time is an essential life skill and asking your children questions about time at home is a great way to help consolidate the learning.
Vocabulary
Students have been learning 6 new words each week. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They are also retrieving words that they have learnt about already this year. These words are helping to add depth to our writing when we use them expertly, with prompting.
Thank you so much for your support,
GRADE 5 TEACHERS
