Extra-Curricular
The Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES) is an initiative designed to provide high ability students with enriching educational experiences beyond the standard curriculum. This program, offered by the Victorian Government, is aimed at students who show exceptional talent or interest in specific subject areas. VCES events are tailored to challenge these students, helping them explore complex concepts, develop critical thinking skills, and nurture their passions in a collaborative environment. They offer students the opportunity to engage with advanced topics and interact with like-minded peers who share similar interests. These programs are designed to stretch student’s abilities, helping them gain confidence, enhance their problem-solving skills, and foster a love for learning.
We are excited to highlight some VCES events that students have participated in over August:
- Secrets of Eromanga (grade 3/4 students): This event took students on an exciting journey into the world of palaeontology. "Secrets of Eromanga" delved into the rich history of Australia's prehistoric past, focusing on the discovery of dinosaur fossils in the Eromanga region. Students met palaeontologist, Tim Richards, and had the chance to learn about the processes of excavation, fossil identification, and the significance of these findings in understanding Earth's history. This event not only fuelled a passion for science and history but also encouraged students to think critically about the natural world.
2. Dinosaur Dynamics (grade 5/6 students): "Dinosaur Dynamics" took students on a thrilling exploration of the mechanics and behaviour of dinosaurs. Students participated in hands-on activities that revealed how these ancient creatures moved, hunted, and survived in their environments. The event engaged students in scientific inquiry, encouraging them to apply physics, biology, and mathematics in a real-world context. Students gained a deeper understanding of the dynamic world of dinosaurs and the scientific principles that help us understand their existence.
3. Adventures Unlimited: The Land of Lost Things Launch with Andy Griffiths (grade 3-6 students): In this VCES event, students met author Andy Griffiths and were taken on a journey through his latest book, The Land of Lost Things, where they got an exclusive look into the creative process behind his stories. Andy Griffiths completed a live reading for students and held an interactive discussion about the themes and ideas in The Land of Lost Things. Students had the opportunity to try their hand at writing, guided by Andy's tips and techniques for crafting compelling stories. They then got to ask Andy questions about his books, his writing process, and what it takes to be a successful author. Students got a sneak peek into upcoming projects and the inspiration behind Andy’s works. This event was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn from one of Australia’s most popular authors.
Students are selected for VCES (Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series) events considering the following factors:
- Academic Performance: Students who demonstrate high academic achievement or potential are prioritised. This is assessed through their grades, classroom performance, and teacher recommendations.
- Interests and Passion: Students who show a strong interest in the subjects or areas related to the event, such as science, technology, or the arts, are more likely to be selected. This passion is often observed in the student's participation in relevant activities or clubs.
- Behaviour: A student’s behaviour is a crucial factor. Those who consistently display positive behaviour, such as respectfulness, responsibility, and collaboration, are given preference. This ensures that the selected students can positively contribute to and benefit from the event.
- Attendance: Regular attendance is another important criterion. Students who consistently attend school and engage actively in their classes are more likely to be chosen. Good attendance indicates a student's commitment and reliability.
- Previous Participation: If a student has participated in VCES events before, this can be a factor in selection. While previous participation shows experience and interest, it may also be considered whether it’s fair to give opportunities to other students who haven't yet had the chance.
Selection is ultimately a balanced decision, aiming to provide opportunities to those students who will gain the most from the experience while ensuring the group benefits from a diverse range of participants.
2025 Planning
