Years 5 & 6
This week in 5-6 we took a deep dive into the learning pit, learning how to analyse and write complex sentences.
A complex sentence has an independent and a dependent clause. They are joined together with a subordinating conjunction.
Right now, you’re thinking – SHEESH! That sounds complicated. And we found it hard to start with.
BUT with persistence and practice we started to get it.
Did you know that if the sentence starts with the dependent clause, you must use a comma before you write the independent clause? Did we hear you say, “Of course I did”? Lots of us do it, but not many of us know what or why we do it.
EXAMPLES:
I have been a great bike rider since I was four years old. (Ava)
Jeremy ate the strawberry although they are not the fruit he likes. (Cooper)
Why are we learning this? We use complex sentences in biographies. For example, “Although her family could not afford a coach, Cathy Freeman still trained weekly”.
We look forward to sharing our published works with you.
