What are we learning in the Art Room?

Foundation

Foundation students have been learning how to mix colours. They have been practicing how to mix two primary colours together to make a secondary colour. They are working on establishing their painting skills by carefully washing and cleaning their brushes before changing colours. Students have painted a colour wheel and are now using their colour mixing skills and new found knowledge to paint some amazing colour cats.

Year 1 & 2

Year 1 & 2 students have been exploring the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. They have been making connections with how she uses dots in her work to symbolise different people. In response to their understanding, they have created some amazing dotty artworks symbolising important people in their lives and the connections those people have with each other. Students have practised different ways to create dots by combining drawing and printing techniques. They have also explored a variety of different art mediums as they layered dots in their artwork.

Year 3 & 4

What an exciting week it has been for the Year 3 & 4 students and teachers. On Tuesday they went to the National Gallery of Victoria to view the retrospective art exhibition of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Students were thrilled to see this work up close and to further reinforce their understanding of her characteristic dotty style. They were able to see how her artistic style has developed and grown from childhood to her current work at age 96. ‘The Princess of Polka Dots’ did not disappoint, and this exhibition was fabulous. It was such an immersive and interactive experience for all students involved. They were able to see how pattern and repetition is used throughout her work. They were able to reflect on what they have learnt and use this knowledge to plan and inspire their own artwork moving forward.

Year 5 & 6

The Year 5 & 6 students are finalising their artworks inspired by UK artist Patrick Hughes. Despite a few interruptions due to other school events, they are now preparing their artworks for presentation. We are very excited to witness the optical illusions these artworks will create. Students have strengthened their understanding of the one-point perspective technique and can now draw three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface using the horizon line and vanishing point as reference points.
