Term One! Where did it go?

Each year in the music department we look at Term 1 and wonder where the time went. But when we look back, we realise we have covered a lot of ground. We have enrolled 44 new students, performed at the Paynesville Music Festival, purchased many new instruments, completed technical work learning tasks, and attended many ensemble rehearsals.

Before we go on holidays, it is good to remind families that holidays are a time to play instruments for fun and not necessarily practice. Look up new music, meet a friend and play duets, try favourite pieces in different rooms of the house or serenade your pet. It is important that some playing happen to prepare for the Autumn Concert which we are looking forward to in Week 3 of next term.

Music Uniforms

As we approach the Autumn Concert, it is worth reminding students about the music uniform. We are currently in the process of purchasing new red shirts for new students which we hope will arrive in time for the concert. If they don’t arrive in time, junior band and junior string students will need to wear their best school uniform. The uniforms will definitely be here for the music festival at the end of Term 2.

With the red shirt, students wear black pants or skirt with black socks/tights and fully black shoes. Our concerts are formal, so students need to present at their best. If there are questions, please contact the music department.

Learning Tasks

By the end of term 1, most instrumental music students should have completed their technical work learning task. The results of these will show up on Compass like any other learning tasks. This task emphasises the importance of students learning scales, arpeggios and other technical exercises when learning an instrument. Technical work is set by the music teachers every week and should be worked on as part of a student’s regular practice routine.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Most music teachers are not available for interviews during the normal interview period. Families who would like to speak with music teachers about their child’s progress should contact the music department or the teacher directly to organise a time.
