This dissection provided students with a hands-on, 3D understanding of animal anatomy and the complexity of organisms. They were able to see how the theory of the digestive system translates to the real thing in an interesting and memorable experience.
Did you know the ability to produce electricity that is stored in modern batteries was discovered accidentally?
In the late 1700's a biologist, Luigi Galvani discovered that the frog's legs he was examining appeared to move or come back to life when he was dissecting them. He learnt that a zap of electricity occurred when his dissection tools touched each other and stimulated the nerve system in the dead frogs' legs. This is the same time that Mary Shelly wrote Frankenstein.
In the early 1800's, Alessandro Volta took Galvani's idea and produced the first batteries which were used to power the world's first telegraph systems in the UK and the emerging USA.
Year 12 Chemistry students reproduced some of these electricity yielding experiments in class with some excellent results.
Students made kangaroo chilli con carne and homemade flat bread.
The students made sticky chicken wings with rice and a garnish. They learned how to cut the chicken wings to size, and how to boil, marinade and bake the chicken wings to perfection. The feedback was that it they absolutely loved this recipe and that the flavours were amazing.
Our Year 12 Psychology students have been exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander multi-modal learning. We were fortunate to have Keyanna Hood join us, teaching the girls how to weave while sharing stories about family and history. Meanwhile, the boys engaged with clap sticks before putting their observational learning skills to the test with origami. A hands-on and insightful experience for all!
Students Steph, Xen, Chloe, Sharna and Ava ran their first cafe last Friday 28th March, serving teachers delicious mocktails and smoothies.
The VCE Outdoor and Education classes both had their Alpine hike during March. First, the Year 12 group had a demanding hike up Bungalow Spur from Harrietville, to arrive at Federation Hut. After a windy night, some keen souls made the journey up nearby Mount Feathertop in order to see the sun rise, then the group made their way over the Razorback trail to finish the main hike. The night was spent at JB Plain Hut, with students searching for microbats and eating marshmallows by the fire. Next morning was more walking! This time to Dinner Plain, before heading to Omeo to learn about the Gold Rush, and give students a chance to strike it lucky while gold panning. Sadly, no fortune was to be found.
Last week it was the Year 11 group’s turn. The students pushed through a challenging hike along the Razorback to Federation Hut, with a beautiful night with calm conditions and amazing skies. Plenty of students got up to see the sunrise over Mount Feathertop, before heading back along the Razorback. Almost everyone found the going easier on the way back, with students getting into the hang of hiking with a heavy pack. Kate Lang provided the biggest bag of marshmallows the world has ever seen, which went well with the firewood collection provided by Jack and friends at JB Plain Hut.
Overall, forty students had a new experience that was at various times challenging, rewarding, fun and definitely memorable.
Well done to all the Volleyball teams! Senior boys and girls are proceeding to the next level in Traralgon in May.
