This term in STEM, students embraced cooking through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden project. The project encourages students to connect with food, develop healthy eating habits, and acquire lifelong cooking skills, all while having fun with their classmates.
Last week Year 5 students experienced cooking in a classroom setting instead of at home. They worked together, delegating cooking tasks, managing their time, and cleaning up afterward.
Next term, they will be focusing on electricity and circuits. However, once their garden is grown, they will harvest it to create a more complex dish, building on their skills and understanding of food.
"We're making spring onion pancakes. They smell really good! This is the first time we've cooked without our mum! It's really fun!" – Lucas, Archie and Lachy
"Flipping the pancakes is the trickiest part. Making the dough was the easiest, but it was also intense because it was messy and needed to be just right." – Charlie and Francis
"It is really fun, we are learning how to cook like pros. This is teaching us to be more mature so we can look after ourselves." – Marilia, Lucy, Kyrasta, Avery
"This is the best STEM lesson ever! STEM is our favourite subject. Yummy, yummy in our tummies!" – Amelia and Laura
"It tastes a lot better than I expected it to. I've never cooked pancakes like these before." – Jack
