Stepping up to the challenge

My Journey in the 2025 CLTAV Chinese Reading Competition

Participating in the CLTAV Chinese Reading Competition for the first time was an unforgettable experience. When my Chinese teacher, Ms. Minnie Zeng, introduced the opportunity, I was hesitant. I had seen my sister compete and win before, but I’d also witnessed others freeze on stage. The fear of failure held me back—I didn’t even tell my parents at first.

That changed the day I spotted a quote on the back of a library book: “I don’t lose. I either win or learn.” — Nelson Mandela. It struck a chord with me. I realised I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. I finally told my parents, and with their encouragement, I signed up.

Although Ms. Zeng encouraged me preparing for it over the holiday, I seriously just started two weeks before the competition, but I made the most of my time. I practised during lunch and recess with Ms. Zeng, and in the evenings with my sister. My parents were supportive, always reminding me to believe in myself—even when I felt the pressure of living up to my sister’s success.

On the day of the event, my parents and best friend Brandon L came to cheer me on. Before the competition, we enjoyed various cultural workshops, from tea ceremonies to dragon puppet displays, which made the day even more enriching. As the reading competition began, my nerves kicked in. But when it was finally my turn, I focused on the support around me, took a deep breath, and gave it my all.

Hearing my name announced as the second-place winner was an incredible moment. I was proud—not just of the result, but of having stepped up and tried, especially as the only representative from Box Hill High School.

This experience taught me that courage, effort, and support go a long way. I want to thank my parents, Brandon, my sister, and most of all, Ms. Zeng, for believing in me. I hope more students will take the leap next year.
