Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day

This week, students from ELC to Year 6 warmly welcomed their Grandparents and Special Friends into their classrooms, proudly sharing their learning and enjoying meaningful activities together.

To top off the morning, our special guests were treated to a delicious, morning tea.

The Student Leader Games 🤾

Last week, our student leaders led end-of-term games during both lunchtimes, putting their leadership skills into practice. They set up replays, an obstacle course, soccer drills and oversaw 401 handball games!

The Student Leaders Games were a great way for students to earn points for their houses. Each handball player who won the best of three games earned points.

Congratulations to Emerald House for taking first place in the Student Leader Games! 👏

Year 5/6 Science: Exploring Natural Disasters and Tectonic Plate Movement

Over the past few weeks, our class has been diving into the fascinating world of natural disasters. We have explored the causes and effects of earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, and more - learning how these powerful events shape our planet.

One of the key concepts we focused on is tectonic plate movement, which plays a crucial role in many natural disasters. To bring this idea to life, we conducted a hands-on experiment using Mars Bars to model the way the Earth's crust moves.

Mars Bar Tectonic Plate Experiment

To help us understand the different types of tectonic plate boundaries, we used Mars Bars to represent the Earth's crust and its movement. Here's how it worked:

  1. Divergent Boundaries: By gently pulling the Mars Bar apart, we observed how the chocolate cracked, representing the separation of tectonic plates. This is similar to mid-ocean ridges where new crust is formed.
  2. Convergent Boundaries: When we pushed the Mars Bar together, the chocolate on top buckled, simulating the way mountains and trenches form when plates collide.
  3. Transform Boundaries: Sliding the two halves of the Mars Bar past each other demonstrated how plates move in opposite directions, similar to fault lines that cause earthquakes.

This fun and interactive experiment helped us visualise the real-world movement of tectonic plates deliciously!

Next, we will investigate how scientists predict and monitor natural disasters and what communities can do to stay safe. Stay tuned for more exciting discoveries in our science class!

Year 6 Jumpers have Arrived!

It was wonderful to witness the Year 6 students receive their official Year 6 jumpers! The joy on their faces and the excitement in the air was palpable.

Godspeed to the parents who want to wash these jumpers at some point; students won’t be taking them off any time soon.
