Mental Health Month

Mental Health Month is celebrated each year in the month of October.  This month encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing. It also gives us the opportunity to understand the importance of good mental health in our everyday lives and encourages help seeking behaviours when needed.

According to the World Health Organization, mental health is ‘a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community’

It's important to understand that good mental health is more than not having a mental illness. Someone with ‘good’ mental health feels capable of dealing with the normal, day-to-day situations that we all experience, while someone with a mental health issue or illness finds it difficult to manage their life. Although it’s normal to experience ups and downs, if issues persist and start impacting on a your quality of life, it’s important to seek professional support.

In 2023, the theme for Mental Health Month is:

We all Have a Role to Play

So, what can you do if faced with a tricky conversation?

  • Show you care and give them time and attention
  • Be yourself and be prepared to listen
  • Be non-judgmental, patient, calm, and accepting
  • Know how and when to go to others for help
  • If you feel out of your depth, don't try dealing with the situation alone
