Learning In My Level

A celebration of what's happening across the school!

LEVEL 4 NEWS!

The students are settling into a busy and exciting last term of the year.

E-Smart

Level 4 have looked at the topic ‘cool to be kind’. Students explored ideas of how to show kindness to others online and offline. Students have also reflected on positive personality traits in themselves and others, and how to demonstrate these attributes in the online world.

Students also engaged in the Brainstorm Productions CyberSafety incursion. Level 4 watched Zanna and Eddie create an app to make the internet safer for everyone. Through this incursion students learnt the power of empathy, respect, responsibility, kindness and resilience.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, Level 4 have explored division, money, the transformations of shapes (slide, rotation, flip), mass and capacity. Students are enjoying working on SeeSaw tasks, using hands on materials, working collaboratively and using the Mathletics booklets. Level 4 also started a Maths Smarties project. Each student was given a small pack of smarties/jellybeans to explore fractions, decimals and percentages in a hands on way. Students enjoyed learning how to add and subtract fractions, how to convert fractions to decimals and percentages, exploring the connection between division and fractions and more. Students have also finished their times table challenge, where students aimed to improve their own accuracy and speed of recalling tables up to 12 x 12. We encourage students to continue practicing at home.

Our next topic is Angles and Triangles. We also look forward to our upcoming Fish and Chip day on Tuesday 12th December where students will prepare budgets and money calculations.

 Reader’s Workshop/Inquiry

In Reader’s Workshop Level 4 have looked at fact and opinion, figurative language, cause and effect. For Grammar, students have looked at prepositions, articles (a, an, the), punctuation and dialogue. We are enjoying our reading rotations. Students rotate between grammar, CARS comprehension tests and other activities focused on the reading strategy. Our next reading strategy is learning to find the Author’s Purpose and our Grammar focus is tense.

 Writing

Level 4 earlier this term completed the whole school moderation piece ‘should you be friends with a twit?’. Students wrote a persuasive text and followed the writing structure of OREO. The Level 4 teachers were blown away by all the interesting ideas and techniques students used in their writing. In Writer’s Workshop we have continued to focus on persuasive writing. Students have revised the structure of a persuasive introduction, body paragraphs using the OREO structure and conclusion. Level 4 all wrote a persuasive speech on the topic ‘an activity everyone should try …' and presented their speech to the class. One representative from each class then presented this at the Level ¾ competition in week 5. Well done everyone for your efforts! Our next topic will be revising narrative writing.

Spelling

This year we have had a strong focus on our spelling. Students are continuing to learn about word sounds (phonemes), prefixes and suffixes, word origin (etymology), spelling patterns, exceptions, syllables and more each week.

 Inquiry

Students enjoyed reading the class novel Convict Boy by Jackie French. This links nicely to our Inquiry topic of Australian History: First Settlers. Students are invited to enter the world of young boy Tom Appleby, a convict kid who has been transported from England to Sydney Cove to join the new penal colony. Currently students are working on an Inquiry Lapbook project where they can display their knowledge about life back in 1788. Our History Box incursion was also a great success. Students learnt about convict tokens, life onboard ships in the First Fleet, life in Australia in 1788, spice making and traditional First Nations game Ngaka Ngaka game.

Enrichment

In Level 4 the Enrichment teachers have been focusing on upskilling students in their typing and computer skills. Students in groups are creating a script and play to practice their teamwork and iMovie skills.

Resilience Project & RRRR

Level 3/4 continues with the Resilience Project lessons, whilst continuing with Topic 7 & 8 of the Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships curriculum (RRRR). Students are learning about empathy, gratitude, human rights, different types of violence, where to seek support and gestures of kindness.

Sport

Term 4 has been busy with Level 4 sport. Every alternate week Level 4 heads down to Heatherdale Reserve to practice different sports including tennis, rounders, cricket, lacrosse and tea ball.
