The Middle School IB Programme

MYP Learner Profile: ‘Principled’

The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme aims to cultivate internationally minded individuals who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. As an educator who has been working in the IB field for more than 15 years this is an important mission statement to me which has led to my own attempts to contribute to making the world a better place. One way that I love to generate empathy and understanding of those less fortunate in life in through education.

Recently, our Year 6 cohort delved into the IB learner profile attribute of being principled. Through completing an engaging inquiry into historical changemakers, they explored the lives of individuals who passionately and with unwavering integrity championed the rights of the underprivileged, animals or the environment. These remarkable changemakers were driven by a profound sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere.

Now, equipped with a deeper understanding of the world’s change agents and the values they embodied; our students are embarking on a transformative journey.  Working in small groups they will craft their own campaigns to make the world a better place. Being principled is pivotal to their work, as they must choose topics that they are passionate about and use their understanding of persuasive language and media to prompt their audiences to be aware of the dignity and rights of people, animals, and the environment.

The top three campaigns from Ms Scott’s and my class will pitch their work to the executive team in Week 8. This will give students risk-taking experience through public speaking and ensure they take responsibility for their contributions and respect the opinions of their classmates.

Exciting times!
