Grade 3 News
Important Reminders
As per our school's SunSmart policy, all students are required to wear hats till the end of April 2024.
Important Reminders
- School hats are required to be worn from now until the end of the year. Students will be required to wear them outside starting from next week.
- Homework - just a reminder of homework expectations: Mathletics and regular reading. It is beneficial to maintain a homework routine and to practise the maths skills learnt in class.
- Middle School Open Morning- we are pleased to inform you that the Middle School will be having an Open Morning on Thursday 30th November. The classrooms in grades 3 & 4 will be open to family members from 9.15am until 10.00am. This gives students the opportunity to showcase the work that they have been doing this term.
- Swimming- just a reminder that the Middle School will be embarking on their swimming program next week. It will save time if students wear their bathers underneath their school clothes as well as bring a pair of thongs/sandals to wear to the pool and back to school. Bring along a small bag to hold items such as a wet towel, hair-brush, thongs, and clean underwear to change into. Please remember a drink bottle on these days too.
Learning in Action
Literacy:
During the last two weeks, the students have brainstormed the features of an effective non-fiction text and made an anchor chart listing these qualities. They have also compared texts on the same topic, evaluated them and given reasons for their preferred text. This has been to assist the students to prepare for our current Literacy Unit-Open Cycle/ Reading and Writing Across Genres where students will choose an environmental threat in Australia, research it and present their findings to their peers. Students will also have the ability to choose which writing genre they would like to present their topic with. Therefore, the students have revised the features of the different text types-Narrative, Persuasive and Information.
Students also finished publishing their very own picture storybooks!
Some of the creative Melbourne Cup Day activities
Preview:
Students will observe the use of power language through deliberate word choices i.e. the use of strong verbs. They will also begin to draft their Open-cycle pieces concerning an environmental threat in Australia.
Maths:
Throughout the last two weeks, students have continued exploring the topic of fractions. Students have developed their skills in counting fractions using a number line and representing fractions using different shapes, in word form, and on a number line. Students discussed symmetry, looking at what makes something symmetrical, before finding different things in the classroom that have a line of symmetry and drawing them.
During our Cup Day activities, students measured the distance that bean-bag horses traveled using a metre ruler, to figure out whose horse would win.
Students completed their chance and data investigations and wrote a reflection.

In the next few weeks, students will start to look at financial maths, with a focus on calculating the correct amount of change, and representing money values in different ways.
Wellbeing
This fortnight, due to friendship preferences, we have been discussing healthy friendships and what makes a good friend. Thank you for having that chat with your children at home too as it made for rich discussions.

For the next few weeks, students will reflect on all the strategies and new things they've learned over the year, in Friendology. Students will reflect on how these strategies have impacted their friendships, and create a poster that illustrates the things they've learnt.
Inquiry:
The students have continued learning about the environmental threats in Australia. They have used their rotations to learn more about Fish deaths in the Darling River, Agricultural runoff onto the Great Barrier Reef, and the negative effects of tourism.
