Chitter Chatter Chants and Speed Sounds

What is a Chitter Chatter Chat?

Chitter Chatter Chants use our ‘speed sounds’ and are mnemonic support for learning phonemes and graphemes (letters and sounds).

We want children to look at a letter and say the name and sound of the letter automatically.

Play with Sounds

Play sound games such as I Spy – be careful to use the ‘pure’ sound eg. ‘Mmmm’ – not ‘muh’ or ‘em’.

You can access a video demonstration of pure sounds on the Youtube Channel–@littlelearnersloveliteracy

Being able to hear, say and play with sounds is crucial to reading and spelling development. Parents can play with sounds with activities such as:

  • Which of the snacks begins with /a/ orange or apple?
  • Which colour begins with /p/ pink or blue?
  • Ask your child to touch their t-oe-s, to h-o-p, or d-a-n-ce.
