News from the Library at ECP/Novinky z knihovny ECP

We have had a great start to the year so far, with our new students fully engaging with the Accelerated Reader programme which promotes reading for pleasure. So far this year, students have read and quizzed on over 160 books! Accelerated Reader is a digital programme that helps students and teachers manage and monitor independent reading practice. Students pick a book they would like to read and when they finish the book, they take a short quiz on the computer to check their understanding. As students read and take quizzes, they earn points and can track their progress toward their individualised reading targets.  

Our new online system, Accessit, has also proved a great success and allows staff and students to peruse the whole library catalogue online at their leisure 24/7. Books can be both renewed and reserved online which will mean we can offer a “click and deliver” service to our new site at Elektra.

It has been very sad to see our wonderful library being packed up, but we are delighted that we have a new small-scale library that will operate from the Annexe from where we will be able to supply staff and students with all the reading materials they need! 

Začátek školního roku probíhal skvěle. Naši noví studenti se plně zapojili do programu Accelerated Reader, který podporuje četbu pro radost. V letošním roce studenti zatím přečetli a absolvovali znalostní kvíz na více než 160 knih! Accelerated Reader je digitální program, který pomáhá studentům a učitelům řídit a monitorovat nezávislou aktivitu čtenářů. Studenti si vyberou knihu, kterou by si rádi přečetli, a když knihu dokončí, vypracují na počítači krátký kvíz, aby si ověřili, zda všemu porozuměli. Když studenti čtou a zpracují kvíz, získávají body a mohou sledovat svůj pokrok směrem k jejich individuálně nastaveným cílům v četbě.

Náš nový online systém Accessit se také osvědčil a umožňuje zaměstnancům a studentům prohlížet celý katalog knihovny online ve svém volném čase 24 hodin denně, 7 dní v týdnu. Knihy lze obnovovat i rezervovat online, což znamená, že můžeme nabídnout službu „klikni a doruč“ do našeho nového působiště v Elektře.

Bylo velmi smutné vidět, jak se naše nádherná knihovna balí do krabic, ale jsme potěšeni, že máme novou malou knihovnu, která bude fungovat v budově Annex, odkud budeme moci zaměstnancům a studentům dodávat veškeré zdroje, které budou potřebovat!

Iris Book Award 2024

We are delighted that so far 16 students have signed up to participate in this year’s Iris Book Award.  The Iris Award is a reading collaboration programme involving 28 schools in 7  European countries. As always great books have been selected for both the Middle and High School award and we are looking forward to taking part in both Bookbowls later this year.

Jsme potěšeni, že k účasti v letošním ročníku soutěže Iris Book Award se přihlásilo 16 studentů. Iris Award je program spolupráce v četbě, do kterého se zapojilo 28 škol ze 7 evropských zemích. Jako vždy byly pro střední i nižší kategorii vybrány skvělé knihy a my se těšíme, že se v průběhu tohoto roku zúčastníme soutěže v obou kategoriích.

The Annual Literary Festival/Každoroční literární festival

As a result of our move to Elektra, we have decided to postpone our annual Literary Festival until 22 April, but we already have some great speakers lined up including: 

• Andrew Pratt, author of the Honza detective series
• Honza Vedral, author of the official biography of the legendary ska & reggae originator, Roy Ellis
• And a team of slammers from www.slampoetry.cz who will run a series of workshops for the students.

V důsledku našeho stěhování do Elektry jsme se rozhodli odložit náš každoroční Literární festival na 22. dubna, ale už teď máme přislíbeno několik skvělých řečníků, včetně:

• Andrew Pratt, autor detektivní série Honza
• Honza Vedral, autor oficiální biografie legendárního tvůrce ska & reggae Roye Ellise
• A tým performerů ze www.slampoetry.cz, kteří pro studenty povedou sérii workshopů.

Book Recommendations/Doporučené knihy

I’d like to recommend a book by Simone Van Der Vlugt called Obchodnice z Amsterdamu. It’s a historical novel set mainly in the Netherlands and Belgium about the development of women’s rights. After her parents’ death, Lydie decides to open a cheese factory with a man from a lower status, since she, as a woman, is not allowed to have a business. This makes her life challenging because it is not accepted by many people from her social class. Later on, her daughter gets married and moves to Belgium just shortly before the First World War starts. This book describes the lives of some more or less known women and the impact the War had on them and their future.  

Ráda bych vám doporučila knihu autorky Simone Van Der Vlugt s názvem Obchodnice z Amsterdamu. Je to historický román odehrávající se především v Nizozemsku a Belgii o vývoji ženských práv. Po smrti rodičů se Lydie rozhodne otevřít sýrárnu s mužem z nižšího postavení, protože ona jako žena nesmí podnikat. To činí její život náročným, protože to mnoho lidí z její společenské vrstvy nepřijímá. Později se její dcera vdá a stěhuje se do Belgie těsně před vypuknutím první světové války. Tato kniha popisuje životy některých více či méně známých žen a dopad války na ně a jejich budoucnost.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus - a wonderfully funny, poignant story about Elizabeth Zott, a research chemist in the 1960s who proves that women can be both intelligent and resourceful.  If you enjoyed the Barbie movie, you’ll love this book!

Babel by R. F. Kuang - an amazing historical fantasy that deals with student revolutions, colonial resistance, and the use of language and translation as the dominating tool of the British Empire.  

Lessons in Chemistry od Bonnie Garmus – úžasně zábavný, dojemný příběh o Elizabeth Zott, výzkumné pracovnice v oboru chemie z 60. letech, která dokazuje, že ženy mohou být inteligentní i vynalézavé. Pokud se vám líbil film Barbie, z této knihy budete nadšeni!

Babel od R. F. Kuanga – úžasný historický fantasy román, který se zabývá studentskými revolucemi, koloniálním odporem a používáním jazyka a překladu jako dominantního nástroje Britského impéria.
