Kii 3/4S families!

In Reading, we have been examining the different roles in reciprocal reading - predict, question, clarify and summarise.Through shared stories and thoughtful discussion, students have been revisiting the important roles that help a reading group journey deeply into a text. We have focused particularly on the roles of the Questioner and the Clarifier.

As Questioners, students practised weaving thoughtful “thick” and “thin” questions before, during and after reading, learning how meaningful questions can open pathways to deeper understanding and reflection. In the role of the Clarifier, students worked carefully to notice when meaning became unclear or especially interesting, using their own words to explain ideas and exploring unfamiliar vocabulary through dictionaries and discussion.

It has been wonderful to witness students growing in confidence as thoughtful readers, listeners and speakers, learning to support one another in uncovering the many layers held within a story.

In Writing, students have been exploring different genres - recounts, descriptions, and now cause and effect. Students have been following the writing cycle to seed, plan, draft, edit, publish their writing across different text types. We also started preparing for spelling groups, where students will be grouped based on specific spelling rules and skills they need to target and work on.

In Maths, students have been practising and deepening their understanding of addition and subtraction. We have explored mental and written strategies, particular vertical algorithm rules, to have many tools to use when facing these problems. We have also used our learning to solve worded problems and play games.
