Prep/1 Mainstream

F/1
Students continue to explore the weather through our Discovery Learning program and their writing lessons. This week, our focus is on understanding the role of a weather presenter. Lately, the changes in the weather have given students a wonderful opportunity to observe and describe different types of weather. Over the next few weeks, they will have an opportunity to present their own weather forecast to an audience. We will be making weather presentation windows for some hands-on fun!
In addition, we continue to practise the school and classroom values. At the moment our focus is listening carefully and following instructions quickly. Show ‘n’ Tell is a wonderful way for students to understand how being a kind and respectful audience member is just as important as being a good speaker!
Literacy
In Reading, we will continue to focus on phonics, including sounding out words, reading fluency and spelling words. In Foundation, we have now begun stage 3 sounds which include Yasmin Yak - y and Roxy Rabbit - r..
Foundation students should continue to take home their reading folders to practise reading at home.
In Year 1, the focus has been revising stage 5 and 6 including plural s and es, ck - black duck, sh, - shed shop, ch - chicken and chips, th - thud, thump, thunk. Year one students should practise their reading at home.
In Writing, students are focusing on the following secretarial skills:
- Writing the sounds they hear in each word
- Starting a sentence with a capital letter
- Putting a finger space between each word
- Ending a sentence with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
- Forming letters correctly
Maths
In Mathematics last week, students continued to learn about Place Value and 2-digit numbers. Building up the understanding of “10 ones is 1 ten” and understanding the various representations is an essential skill. Students explored efficient counting strategies, they played ‘race to 100’, and made numbers using concrete materials. We explored the 10s, 5s and 2s skip counting patterns, and touched on odd and even numbers.
This week, our focus has been understanding time. Students have familiarised themselves with the months of the year and the seasons, including identifying special events that happen in our own lives and our community throughout the year. Students have been singing songs about the days of the week, the months of the year, the minutes and the seconds. We explored the various types of activities we do at different times of the day. This focus has tied in nicely with our weather focus, and supporting students' understanding of seasonal changes and events!
