STEM

Over the past few weeks in STEM, it has been wonderful getting to know all of the students as their new STEM teacher and seeing their enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork shine through during learning activities.
Students recently were immersed in some aspects of the engineering design process, working collaboratively in teams to construct the tallest free-standing tower possible using only 80 cups. It was fantastic to see students collaborating, testing ideas, problem-solving and persevering as they refined their designs, even when they were met with the challenge of their tower falling.
We have also been exploring the concept of World Bee Day, which was on Wednesday 20th of May. We learnt about the important role bees play in our environment. Our Prep–2 students drew bees, identified what bees need to survive and were introduced to the pollination process through engaging discussions and hands-on activities. They also applied their learning on what living things need to survive to enable them to design a nature helper environment for another animal of choice.
Students in Years 3–6 also explored pollination as well as the environmental and human impacts on bee habitats, before choosing whether to design their own bee-friendly garden through a labelled drawing or creating a “Save the Bees” awareness poster. These activities encouraged students to recognise the importance of bees on our planet and consider ways we can all help protect them and support their survival.
