Building More Than Towers: Learning Collaboration Through Jenga
Last week during social knowledge group sessions, students have been exploring the importance of collaboration through a fun and engaging game, Jenga!
While Jenga may seem like a simple stacking game, it provides a powerful opportunity for students to practise essential social skills in a hands on and meaningful way. As the tower grows taller and more unstable, students quickly learn that success is not just about individual moves, but about working together as a team.
Throughout the game, students are encouraged to communicate clearly, support one another, and think about how their actions impact the group. You might hear phrases like, “Try this one,” or “Be careful that might make it fall,” demonstrating how students are learning to guide and encourage each other in a positive way.
Jenga also helps students develop patience, turn-taking, and problem-solving skills. They learn to manage feelings of excitement and disappointment, especially when the tower eventually tumbles! These moments provide valuable opportunities to practise resilience and positive responses.
Most importantly, students begin to understand that collaboration means:
- Listening to others’ ideas
- Taking turns and sharing responsibility
- Encouraging and supporting teammates
Working towards a common goal
By incorporating games like Jenga into our social skills groups, we are helping students build strong foundations not only for learning, but for positive relationships both inside and outside the classroom.
We look forward to continuing to develop these important life skills in fun and engaging ways!
