Art at MECS

'Art in the Arvo' Exhibition

Last week, we hosted our 'Art in the Arvo' Exhibition in Secondary art, giving Year 7-10 art students the opportunity to showcase their creative work to teachers, peers, and visitors. For Year 7 and 8 students, this exhibition was the culmination of a unit focused on analyzing and responding to art. Each student selected a work by an artist of their choice, conducted research, and engaged in visual analysis. They then created a response artwork, inspired by the original in style, theme, or technique. Students were free to choose their materials, resulting in a diverse range of works, from stencil and spray paint art to photography, painting, and more, all presented on small canvas panels.

In the Year 9/10 electives, students in drawing and printmaking also had their pieces displayed, featuring a variety of mediums such as pastels, fine liners, lino cuts, dry point etchings, and gelli prints. Also on display was a range of artworks from our VCE: Creative Practice students. It is always so inspiring for our younger students (and teachers!) to see the Senior Secondary’s work and what they to might be able to do should they choose to continue studying art further.

During the lunchtime exhibition, students had the chance to vote for their favourite works in the People’s Choice Award. This semester’s winners were Denali G (9/10), Kim S (8), and a tie between Asher C (7) and Isabella C (7) for first place. It was a wonderful celebration of our students' creative endeavours and a testament to the gifts they’ve been given, as well as their artistic growth and passion this semester.
