Year 10 Celebration Assembly and Dinner

On Friday, Year 10 marked the end of their junior high school experience with a special Celebration Assembly. The students also celebrated completing Year 10 with a formal dinner on Thursday night at the Nowra-Culburra Surf Club.

Congratulations Year 10!

Please keep these young people in your prayers over the coming weeks as they commence their seniors studies and some of them leave school to begin traineeships and apprenticeships.

Ethics Olympiad

Our school is always open for new experiences and so we had two teams, one from Year 6 and one from Year 9, enter the "Ethics Olympiad". In this competition teams are presented with a range of cases that offer ethical questions to discuss. As you can imagine, these are often challenging for students to decide on a position and articulate their thinking.

Over the course of the day the students are involved in four heats, each with two rounds. Both teams enjoyed the thrill of having to work as a team, thinking and responding under pressure. Exhausting but satisfying!

The Year 9 team competed last Friday and Madame Wilkinson and Mrs Ellery were very proud that amongst the names of some prestigious schools, NCS was nominated by the judges as the most improved over the day. For a first time school, this was a great compliment!

Bike for Bibles

Dan Bishop recently completed an ambitious fundraising effort to provide Bibles to communities in need. He cycled 310 miles (500 kilometers) over four days to raise funds for this cause, aiming to ensure that people who cannot afford a Bible would have access to one.

Dan ended up raising $9870!

Donations are still open and can be made here: https://gofund.me/8a9fa729

Well done Daniel!

Fun with synthesisers

Thursday of week 4 brought Ed from Elk Elektronik to NCS with synthesisers for Stages 4 and 5 music students to play with. Students learned about the mechanics and capabilities of synthesisers and drum machines through instruction and play.

Students from Years 7 and 8 explored the different parts of the synths and how sounds are generated and changed through the different filters.

The elective music class got further explanation on the specific roles of synth sounds while working to re-create the sound layers of Billie Eilish's Birds Of A Feather. The day was all about boosting students' understanding of electronic instruments and how synthesisers play an important role in man of the music platforms students may be currently exploring (bandlab/garage band). It was a great day and we look forward for Ed coming back soon.

Year 10 History - Vietnam: A Powerful Lesson in Living History

Last week, our Year 10 students were privileged to attend a captivating presentation from Vietnam War veteran Vince and his wife Nancy, who shared their personal experiences and insights into Australia's role in the Vietnam War.

Over four periods, Vince and Nancy gave students an eye-opening look at this significant chapter in Australian history, combining historical detail with deeply personal perspectives.

One of the highlights of the presentation was the opportunity for students to dress in authentic Australian servicemen’s uniforms from the Vietnam era. Wearing these uniforms brought an element of realism to the experience, helping students connect more deeply with the experiences of soldiers in the field. As they donned these garments, students were reminded of the courage and resilience that Australian servicemen showed during the war.

Vince shared his firsthand account of the events in Vietnam, giving students an intimate understanding of the challenges faced by Australian soldiers. Through his stories, he provided a vivid account of the daily life of a serviceman, the dangers faced in the jungles, and the camaraderie shared among soldiers. Nancy added a unique perspective, discussing what it was like for families back home and the emotional toll the war took on loved ones awaiting the return of those deployed.

Vince and Nancy’s presentation also highlighted the broader context of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. They explored the reasons for Australia's participation, the impact of the war on Australian society, and the varied public responses at the time. Students gained a balanced perspective on the complex political and social dynamics of the period, including the protest movements that arose in Australia and the challenges veterans faced upon returning home.

The presentation left a powerful impact on our students, who expressed gratitude for the rare opportunity to learn about the Vietnam War from those who lived through it. Vince and Nancy’s willingness to share both the triumphs and struggles of their journey offered students a profound, humanizing perspective on this period in history.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Vince and Nancy for their time, openness, and courage in sharing their story. Their presentation not only deepened our students' understanding of the Vietnam War but also underscored the importance of remembering and learning from those who served.
