Medieval Day
Year 8 steps back in time!
Our Year 8 students took a step back in time to experience the thrills, challenges, and customs of medieval life with our annual Medieval Day! This full-day event brought history to life, offering hands-on experiences that captivated the entire year group. Here’s a recap of the exciting activities that made this day a fantastic journey through time.
Weapons and Warfare Presentation by James Adams
The day began with an electrifying presentation from James Adams on medieval weapons and warfare. From swords to shields, and bows to battle techniques, students got to see and understand the types of weaponry that shaped the medieval battleground. James’s dynamic presentation gave our students a new appreciation of the strategic skills and physical strength needed by medieval warriors as well as insight into how these changed over the years.
The Pillory Activity
Nothing says “medieval justice” like a turn in the pillory! Under the watchful eye of Mrs Rebel, Mr. Asher, Mr. Clarke and students volunteered to experience what it was like to be “locked” in this form of punishment including being pelted with wet sponges instead of rotten vegetables (all in good fun, of course!). This activity highlighted the sometimes harsh realities of medieval justice while providing plenty of laughs for the students and teachers alike.
The Stag Hunt with Mr. Curran and Myles
Mr. Curran and Myles led students on a simulated medieval stag hunt, offering a glimpse into the hunting practices of the time. The thrill of the chase and the strategies employed gave students an engaging look into how nobles entertained themselves and sourced food in medieval Europe.
Juggling Workshop with Mr. DeRooy
Medieval entertainment came alive in Mr. DeRooy’s juggling workshop! From beginners to hidden talents, students tested their coordination and skill, discovering first-hand how medieval entertainers wowed audiences in courts and villages alike. Mr. DeRooy’s expert tips had students laughing, learning, and juggling like jesters!
Jousting Tournament with Mr. Harrison and Mr. Flippance
The day wouldn’t be complete without a jousting tournament! Mr. Harrison and Mr. Flippance coached the students through a mock jousting event, encouraging bravery, agility, and friendly competition. Students tested their skills with lance and “horse,” channeling the spirit of medieval knights in this thrilling event.
Illuminated Manuscript
Mrs Stewart brought her own particular style and grace in teaching about the history of the illuminated manuscript and gave students what they needed to create their own medieval works of art.
Medieval Feast
No medieval day would be complete without a feast! Students enjoyed a medieval-style banquet, complete with foods that transported everyone to a grand hall in a castle. The feast was a welcome break and a chance for students to discuss the morning’s activities and share their excitement for the challenges yet to come.
The Castle Crusade
The grand finale of the day was the Castle Crusade! In teams, students used materials provided to design and build enormous “castles,” combining creativity with a bit of historical insight. Once the castles were constructed, it was time for an epic showdown! Each team tried to attack and destroy the other castles, testing both their engineering skills and their battle strategy. Laughter, competition, and ingenuity filled the air as students competed to conquer!
Medieval Day was a fantastic journey into the past, allowing our Year 8 students to immerse themselves in the life, entertainment, and challenges of the medieval era. Many thanks to all the teachers and guests who made this day possible. The memories and insights gained will certainly enrich their study of history for years to come
