SAKG NEWS

This fortnight in kitchen we are all turning Japanese! We are making a traditional Japanese savoury pancake called "Okonomiyaki" which uses a batter mixed with loads of shredded cabbage and then panfried or grilled. The name literally means "grilled as you like it" and there are many variations depending on the region and the individual household. It is a great way to use up bits and pieces that are left over as toppings, and then is finally garnished with mayonnaise and tonkatsu or speciality Okonomiyaki sauce. We are using cabbage harvested from our garden and we have some lovely varieties, including the traditional round cabbage and also savoy.

We are also using the cabbage in our Japanese cabbage rolls which use a blend of minced meat wrapped and then steamed in cabbage leaves.

It wouldn't be Japanese without "Temakizushi" or hand rolled sushi. The students have been preparing fillings, including lettuce from the garden, carrot, cucumber, avocado, tuna, and crispy chicken and then rolling them with sushi rice and seaweed, before chopping them and serving them as bite sized pieces, perfect for finger food.

We have also been making green tea ice-cream with "mochi" or sweet rice cakes for dessert. For the ice-cream we are using a no churn recipe which only requires a cake tin, electric beaters, and patience! The recipe attached is the basic vanilla option, to change it to any other flavour just add that flavour. For example, to make it macha icecream just add about 10g of macha powder. To make it chocolate just add some cocoa powder. You can also add finely chopped or grated chocolate, pureed fruit, pretty much anything you like.

The garden rotation focus for this fortnight was on plant ID for grade 4 and pond renovation for grade. The grade 4s worked in small groups to identify ten plants in the garden that we harvest and use often. The grade 5s emptied the bathtub pond, cleaned it with a vinegar solution, re-potted water plants, arranged new decorative rocks in the bottom of the pond before filling it with water. They brainstormed how to care for fish so that when they arrive, they are looked after well by the kids. Now all we are ready for the arrival of the goldfish and tadpoles!

About thirty punnets of mixed seedlings (silverbeet, lettuce, tomatoes and marigold) were given away to families one day after school. The students grew them, and they were excess to our needs!

Lastly grade 3 students have started taking home their sunflower seedlings that they planted in their first lesson of garden.
